first_img2019 marks the passing of 100 years since the Bentley brothers first began selling French cars in a small suburb of northwest London. The company has come a long way since, solidifying its reputation as makers of some of the most desirable luxury cars in the world. To mark its centenary, Bentley has revived the Flying Spur badge to create what it believes is “the finest super-luxury sports sedan ever built.” It’ll serve as a rival to the Porsche Panameras and Mercedes-AMG S63s of this world and “pushes the boundaries of both technology and craftsmanship to deliver segment-defining levels of performance and refinement,” according to a statement released Tuesday. It’s so special, Bentley says, that the company even designed a new emblem for it. Enlarge ImageThe Flying Spur’s body panels are made entirely of aluminum. Bentley Rather than borrowing underpinnings from elsewhere in the family, the new Bentley Flying Spur is built on a brand-new platform. The all-aluminum bodywork is bold and confident in its styling, with numerous cues borrowed from the Continental GT. The giant grille, muscular lines and aforementioned Flying B mascot (electronically deployed and illuminated, naturally) are obvious highlights, but the car is littered with exquisite details that shows a lot of time and energy has been spent making it special. We suspect it’s possible to own this car for many months and still be discovering new trinkets, details and flourishes. Highlights, and there are many, include the cut-crystal effect detailing on the LED matrix headlights, the three-dimensional diamond quilted leather or wood door inserts, and the diamond knurling on the interior air vents. These, we’re told, required a new software algorithm to be invented in order to facilitate their layout on the complex curves on the ducts. All of this is, of course, totally unnecessary, but very beautiful all the same. The new Bentley Flying Spur is a large car, measuring 208.8 inches in length and 77.3 inches in width. It tips the scales at 5,371 pounds, making it as heavy as the company’s Bentayga SUV. Thankfully it’s blessed with an abundance of power from a twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter, W12 engine that produces 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough for a sports car-baiting 3.7-second acceleration time to 60 miles per hour. How it also manages a 207-mph top speed — that’s well north of what your average Lamborghini Huracan can manage — is anyone’s guess. 12 Photos Bentley Porsche Lamborghini Power is sent to all four wheels via the same eight-speed, ZF-sourced, dual-clutch transmission Bentley uses in the Continental GT. Those of you brave enough to seek the Flying Spur’s top speed will find it in sixth gear, with seventh and eighth, the overdrive gears, reserved for obtaining the best economy. That figure is currently unconfirmed, but expect a fuel tank large enough for a 500-mile range.Unlike the previous Flying Spur, which used a fixed, 40:60 front/rear power split, the new transmission is a clutched system, which sends most of the engine’s torque to the rear axle. This, Bentley is keen to point out, gives the front end a much lighter feel, one that is eager to change direction “almost at the speed of thought.” Of course, slippery conditions underfoot will cause drive to be sent to the front axle on demand, delivering fully automatic active all-wheel drive when circumstances dictate.Various drive modes are available. Comfort and Bentley modes send up to 354 pound-feet of torque to the front axle to facilitate greater traction and all-weather drivability, while in Sport, front axle torque is limited to 206 pound-feet. The remainder is sent to the rear wheels in a manner that will allow quite un-Bentley-like angles of slip in what essentially amounts to a drift mode. Bentley Flying SpurEnlarge ImageThe Flying Spur’s face is reminiscent of the Continental GT. Bentley At the car’s unveiling, Bentley’s designers were keen to recount tales of the Flying Spur pulling off Ken Block-spec backward-entry powerslides, tires fully lit through the snow and ice phase of its testing. The system purportedly gives you enough leeway to showboat spectacularly, though not enough rope to hang yourself should you run out of talent. The Flying Spur should also acquit itself well in driving situations that don’t call for tire smoke. This new model features electronic all-wheel steering, which serves the purpose of improving stability at highway speeds, as well as increasing maneuverability in tight spots. Around town, the rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction to the fronts, effectively reducing the wheelbase. At highway speeds, the system steers the rear wheels in the same direction as the fronts, providing more confidence when moving quickly. We can’t tell you about ride comfort at this stage, but this is a Bentley, so the smart money is on it being buttery smooth, particularly in light of the fact it uses continuously regulated three-chamber air springs. A quartet of ride height sensors continuously measure the distance between the axle and the body. If any part of the car is higher or lower than it should be, the air volume in the springs is corrected in order to restore the normal ride height. Bentley Flying SpurEnlarge ImageDiamond-quilted leather and three-dimensional wood door inserts highlight the Flying Spur’s cabin. Bentley This works in conjunction with Bentley Dynamic Ride System — a 48-volt system that controls an actuator unit, that alters the stiffness of the antiroll bars to help keep the car flat through bends.Of course, there will be many owners who may never actually get to drive the Flying Spur, preferring instead to be driven. Those who do ride as passengers certainly won’t consider themselves to be missing out. The wheelbase is a handy 125.8 inches, so there’s plenty of room front and rear. Inside, you’ll find an abundance of the latest technology, all of which is stunningly well-integrated. The main feature is a 12.3-inch display in the center of the dashboard which, like the display in the latest Continental GT, rotates to reveal driver gauges or a blank panel that allows the dashboard to flow uninterrupted across the full length of the cabin. Unlike early versions of the Continental GT, the Flying Spur can now be driven with that blank plate on show — ideal for those who don’t wish to be too distracted by screens.Bentley Flying SpurEnlarge ImageRear seat passengers will surely have an abundance of legroom. Bentley Those that do want to bask in tech are in for a treat. The highlight is an all-new, 5-inch Touch Screen Remote that lives atop the transmission tunnel in the rear cabin. This can be removed at the touch of a button and allows rear occupants to control a great number of the Flying Spur’s systems. Whether it’s the rear seat massage function, climate control, mood lighting or remotely deploying the Flying B mascot.Three audio systems are on offer, including a standard 10-speaker, 650-watt, entry-level model, and a Bang & Olufsen 1,500-watt, 16-speaker setup with illuminated grilles. But if you want to push the boat out, there’s also a Naim for Bentley 2,200-watt, 19-speaker setup with active bass transducers built into the front seats, allowing you to literally feel the bass through your backside. The whole thing feels exceptionally well put together, as you’d expect from Bentley, and we expect it’ll be a stunningly effective alternative to the typical GTs and high-performance SUVs of this world. All signs point to Bentley having created a spectacular 100th birthday present to itself, and to anyone else blessed enough to be able to afford one.Bentley Flying SpurEnlarge ImageThe first Flying Spur deliveries will take place in early 2020. first_imgInternational Organization for Migration (IOM) director general William Lacy Swing has called upon all for redoubling efforts to ensure that support for victims of trafficking becomes a key pillar in their work, reports UNB.”We must redouble our efforts to ensure that support for victims of trafficking becomes a key pillar in our work,” he said in an op-ed marking the World Day against Trafficking in Persons that falls on today, Monday.Swing said businesses should also ensure they have established feedback loops so that they can continually improve reporting mechanisms, protection for whistle-blowers, and prevention of further harm.”More and more companies are coming together to address the risks they face in supply chains, but remediation for victims of trafficking remains a new area of work for the private sector,” he wrote in the article titled “With Public and Private Sectors at Odds, Traffickers Win. Let’s work together to protect its victims.”Terming positive trends encouraging, he said much more needs to be done. “Today, I will focus on a key challenge, which I see as the next frontier in supply chain engagement: mobilizing the private sector to ensure that migrants who have been wronged receive the remedy and justice they deserve.”Beyond strengthening their due diligence, he said, companies can and must take responsibility for harm perpetrated against their workers and ensure that all possible steps are taken to assist victims of trafficking in their recovery – which they can do by working closely with governments, civil society organizations, international organizations, and the victims themselves.Swing said states bear the primary responsibility to address human trafficking and protect trafficked victims. “By establishing stronger connections between private sector and public efforts to help victims of trafficking, together we can do the work of rebuilding broken lives.”Earlier this year IOM, the UN Migration Agency, launched a set of practical guidelines for companies to address this challenge. In line with the United Nations’ “Protect, Respect, and Remedy” Framework, IOM’s Remediation Guidelines describe the many avenues that businesses can take to offer remediation to victims of exploitation, in partnership with local state and non-State actors. These routes include facilitating access to victim services and support systems such as medical or psychosocial care; relocating victims to new job environments; offering voluntary return to countries of origin; support for recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration where possible, said the IOM chief.”But as we mark the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, we are also reminded, sadly, that migrants are too often exposed to disproportionate risks of exploitation and abuse when looking for better employment opportunities away from home,” Swing said.Every year, millions of migrants are trafficked within and across borders and find themselves trapped in forced labour. In some cases, men and women are coerced by force into work, enduring violence, threats or psychological manipulation.Often they find themselves indebted via unfair recruitment processes or employment conditions, all the while facing enormous pressures from their families and communities who may have gone into debt themselves, just to start their job search.Other forms of exploitation only slightly more benign;-having to toil under dangerous conditions, settling for menial wages, facing hidden deductions and unreasonable restrictions during both work and non-work hours.”These abuses, too, harm migrants and violate their rights,” Swing said adding that these types of abuse can occur all along an industry’s supply chain and can be easily concealed among layers of sub-contractors.He said trafficking in persons exists today in every country and every economic sector. “Whether the business is coffee, clothing or construction, this much is clear: no workplace or community is immune to human trafficking.””We must all insist that supply chains are free from human trafficking and other forms of exploitation,” Swing said.He said they are already seeing signs of change and a growing number of companies are taking action in their supply chains; more governments are developing new policies and regulatory mechanisms for greater business accountability.”Civil society also plays a critical role in advocating for migrants’ rights and ensuring they have access to the protection and assistance services they need,” he added.last_img read more

first_imgWENDY RIGBY / TEXAS PUBLIC RADIOConnie De La Rosa holds baby Angel in the NICU at University Hospital. She’s the first participant in a new study of Family Nurture Intervention. Each year, 1 in 10 babies born in the U.S. spends time in the NICU, the neonatal intensive care unit. Years later, many of these children have developmental, learning or behavioral problems, including autism.A new study is designed to determine if different kinds of nurturing in the first few months of life could improve outcomes. San Antonio mothers and babies are taking part in the research. Baby Angel came into the world early, 11 weeks early to be exact, weighing less than four pounds.“He was so tiny and had all these wires on him and I was scared to hurt him,” said Angel’s mother Connie De La Rosa.De La Rosa spends as much time as she can with her son in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of San Antonio’s University Hospital.WENDY RIGBY / TEXAS PUBLIC RADIOBaby Angel was born 11 weeks early. He’s spending time in University Hospital’s NICU until he’s ready to go home.Umber Darilek , RN, said there’s no playbook for mothers of tiny, sometimes sick babies.  No book to read, no real world advice from your grandmother on how to cope.“We see moms looking terrified,” Darilek commented. “A lot of women don’t know how to approach their babies, especially when there are tubes and lines coming out of all directions.”That’s why Martha Welch, MD, of Columbia University Medical Center in New York is studying an intervention called Family Nurture. Welch believes early physical trauma and a potential lack of emotional connection between mother and baby may set up these young patients for difficulties later.“They’re isolated,” Welch stated. “They’re not having social involvement. We think they are being adversely conditioned to human contact because so much of the contact is challenging. It’s tubes and IVs and skin pricks. Pre-term infants have a higher rate of risk for developmental problems including autism.”Welch says early in life, when babies cuddle in their mother’s arms, or nurse, or have eye contact, they develop a bond at the visceral level, in the autonomic nervous system that’s responsible for what we call “gut feelings.” That means later in life, you may feel calmer just by being around your mother. To help establish that connection in the NICU, nurture specialists help new moms with skin-to-skin holding, comforting touch, scent exchange, eye contact and vocal soothing.“We did a very successful first trial with amazing outcomes, totally different from the usual outcomes for pre-term infants in terms of cognition, language, risk for autism, behavior,” Welch said. Now, University Hospital is taking a page from Columbia’s playbook, conducting a family nurturing study of its own to try and replicate positive results for NICU babies.“It was like a light bulb. It was like ‘wow,’” said neonatologist Alice Gong, MD, of UT Health San Antonio.Gong said during her three decades of dealing with mother-baby interaction, she has witnessed the temper tantrums and intestinal issues that often plague NICU babies for years.“They’ve been sheltering their baby for so long,” Gong said of the new mothers. “They’re so scared they are going to die that they pretty much don’t mother them the same way they do their other children.”Gong is recruiting 50 moms and babies for her study. De La Rosa is the first.“She told me that I would help my baby connect,” De La Rosa commented. “I hold him skin to skin, talk to my baby, show him emotions. Now mommy instincts are kicking in.”Welch said science backs up her early positive results. By 18 months, one in four NICU babies has behaviors that fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. With Family Nurture Intervention, that number decreased to one in ten. The ultimate goal of these studies is to change the culture in NICUs around the country. Copyright 2017 KSTX-FM. first_imgShare22TweetShare25Email47 Shares“Gender Wage Gap Warning.” Credit: Mike LichtMay 22, 2017; Boston GlobeA recent study by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that the median income of American men between the ages of 18 and 34 is falling, but that of women is rising.According to the Boston Globe, “The share of young men making between $30,000 and $100,000 a year shrank significantly over the past four decades, despite the fact that they are better educated and working full time at the same rate.”During the same period of time (1975–2015), the number of young women in higher income brackets has grown. In 1975, less than two percent of women made more than $60,000 per year, in 2015 dollars; in 2015, 13.1 percent of them did. That’s still less than the proportion of men in the highest income bracket (23.5 percent of men make $60,000 per year or more), but the gap has shrunk significantly. Source: Census Bureau, 1975 and 2016 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic SupplementWomen’s wages have risen slightly since 1975, but their educational attainment levels have risen significantly in that time. Seventy percent of women have a bachelor’s or an associate’s degree, compared to 36.6 percent in 1975, meaning that women’s rate of higher education has nearly doubled, compared to about a 20 percent increase for men, who now make up less than half of graduates from universities. (According to the Washington Post, “starting with people born in the 1960s, women have…graduated at higher rates than men.”) NPQ has reported on this dichotic gap between education and income, noting that it is particularly significant in the nonprofit field. The upshot: both men and women have made significant gains in education, but only women have gained in earnings, and they haven’t gained enough to catch up with the average wage for men, whether measured today or 40 years ago. Among other concerns, that’s a problem for women’s equality and for the general financial welfare of American households.Dozens of economic and social realities play into these wage trends, from family leave policies to the failure of wages to grow apace with inflation. The “Fight for $15,” which NPQ has closely followed, is not just a fight to recognize that the wealth gap has created great inequality; it’s a fight to recognize that real wealth has been lost in many households. Nonprofits are a part of this landscape, fighting the consequences of poverty while sometimes paying insufficient wages to their own staffs.Part of what’s caused the disparity between men’s and women’s wage trends, according to the Boston Globe, is that “women are benefiting from the fact that many of the fastest-growing jobs that pay stable middle-class wages are in industries that employ a lot of women, such as health care and professional services.”That also might help account for the fact that women’s wages have failed to catch up to men’s: Women’s increased presence in caregiving, teaching, and other human services professions has correlated with a decline in the wages of those jobs. According to the New York Times, when women begin to dominate a professional field, wages in that field fall as much as 57 percentage points. Researchers at Cornell concluded “pure discrimination may account for 38 percent of the gender pay gap.” Healthcare and other direct service nonprofits have struggled to pay a living wage, creating “wage ghettos” that disproportionately affect women and women of color. These wage trends affect the entire economy, not just women; last year, NPQ noted that “the United States could add $4.3 trillion to its economy in 2025 if women were to attain full gender equality.”The decline in men’s wages and the failure of women’s wages to rise proportionately affects more than just their buying power in the market. The Census Bureau study reported that more young men and women live with their parents than with a spouse, and one in four are idle, meaning not working or in school. As has been exhaustively noted, the much-touted recovery of the economy since 2008 is insufficient, and the recent wage study shows this in stark numbers. For millions of people, wages are not improving, and the need for public service increases even as social programs come onto the federal chopping block. Nonprofits may consider their own roles in this trend, and rethink what might be the most efficient way to provide a decent living for American households.— Erin RubinShare22TweetShare25Email47 Shareslast_img read more

(Editor)Mar 20 2019A new tool to help physiotherapy students master complex fine motor skills needed to assess and treat patients suffering physical conditions, such as back pain and spinal cord injuries, is being used at the University of Melbourne.Developed by researchers in the University’s School of Computing and Information Systems and the Department of Physiotherapy, the device – SpinalLog – looks and feels like a human spine.Using smart foam sensors, SpinalLog measures the pressure being applied to the spine by the student’s hand or fingers during a simulated assessment.Related StoriesWoman who does not feel painSleep quality and fatigue among women with premature ovarian insufficiencyCompounded pain relief creams not effective finds studyThis information is then displayed on a 3D spinal model depicted on-screen, providing real-time visual feedback on the pressure pattern and technique used to mobilize the spine.University of Melbourne Human-Computer Interaction lecturer Eduardo Velloso, who helped design the device, said SpinalLog offers students a safe way of practicing their skills.”Traditionally, to teach these skills, the instructor demonstrates a force pattern on a volunteer and asks students to practice on each other by replicating the moment,” Dr Velloso said.”However, because these movements are very subtle, it is difficult for students to obverse them fully. Similarly, when students perform the movements themselves, it is difficult for instructors to provide feedback based on what they can see.”Preliminary tests show the visual feedback has a huge impact on students’ ability to replicate the force pattern demonstrated by the instructor.University of Melbourne physiotherapy senior lecturer David Kelly said SpinalLog represents the real-life conditions of a human spine suffering different levels of stiffness, bringing the clinic, to the classroom.”Students get clear and immediate feedback on an authentic feeling spine,” Dr Kelly said.”This means they get a better experience; they learn faster and are able to mimic what the instructor is teaching them, making them better prepared for the sorts of techniques that they’ll need as practitioners.” Source:https://www.unimelb.edu.au/last_img read more

In-memory de-duplication technology to accelerate response for large-scale storage Citation: Data processing architecture can reconfigure content within IoT data processing stream (2018, March 8) retrieved 18 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-03-architecture-reconfigure-content-iot-stream.html Stream processing technology, which is effective in the high-speed processing of these sorts of huge volumes of data, has issues in that, because processing must be temporarily stopped when changing or adding processing content according to additions or improvements to services, the provision of services can be delayed. Now, Fujitsu has developed a new stream processing architecture that automatically switches to a newly provided data processing program when a parallelized data processing job has been completed, by separating stream processing into data reception processing and actual data processing so that data reception processing and current data processing are not stopped (patent pending). As a result, in a simulation of the reception of a few dozen bytes of data per second from one million vehicles, Fujitsu has confirmed that this architecture is able to continue processing streaming data while adding or changing processing programs, with an average delay increase volumes of five milliseconds or less. Fujitsu Laboratories is looking to commercialize this technology during fiscal 2018 on the Mobility IoT Platform, offered by Fujitsu Limited, and extend it to other industry areas. Details of this technology were presented at DEIM2018 (the Forum on Data Engineering and Information Management), a conference being held in Awara, Fukui Prefecture, Japan, from March 4.Development BackgroundWith the recent development of IoT technologies, data has begun to be gathered from all sorts of objects and collected in datacenters, and it is expected that by analyzing and utilizing this, a variety of new services will be created. In the case of connected cars, for example, it is thought that by collecting, analyzing, and utilizing data from automobiles in real time, it will be possible to relieve congestion, assist drivers, and improve the safety of autonomous driving (figure 1). Details of the Newly Developed TechnologyNow, Fujitsu Laboratories has developed Dracena, an architecture that can modify the processing programs of a system while it is operating, without halting operations. With this technology, when changing or adding data processing contents, this architecture distributes the new data processing program as a message, in the same way data is distributed, to each individual processing unit, called an object, such as the processing unit for each car. This eliminates the impact on overall processing speed due to the concentration of queries on the repository. Moreover, by separating intra-object message reception processing and data processing in this architecture, the system is able to add in the new data processing program without stopping the message reception processing or the existing data processing, and then have all objects change over to the new data processing program with the same timing. This has enabled Fujitsu Laboratories to create a stream processing architecture in which the data processing program can be added to or changed without stopping, in order to continue parallelized processing without holding back the flow of huge volumes of data for copying (figure 2).The results of a simulated evaluation confirmed that, in a use case in which a few dozen bytes of data are transmitted once each second from one million vehicles, this architecture was capable of continuously providing services when adding a sudden-braking detection service in a situation where the system was already providing a service to detect excessive driving times, with an average delay increase volume of five milliseconds or less. This architecture will enable the rapid provision of real-time services that require uninterrupted operation and that can respond to problems occurring in society, including providing driving assistance for connected cars, supporting energy-saving usage of appliances, providing in-home health and safety monitoring, and providing travel guidance for tourists using smartphones. Moreover, this architecture enables users to adopt a build method in which they first build a base system aimed at simple analysis and utilization, and then gradually add new services. Using this technology in the case of automobiles, for example, it would be possible to begin with a system that reads signs of drunk driving based on steering wheel operation data, and then add new services layer by layer, such as combining this with map data to detect crosswinds at tunnel exits, or combining it with image data to detect the presence of illegally parked cars, which can be expected to improve the efficiency of service development.Fujitsu aims to commercialize this technology during fiscal 2018 as a constituent element of the Mobility IoT Platform offered by Fujitsu Limited. In addition, Fujitsu is looking to extend this technology beyond the mobility field to business areas that require real-time services based on data that is continually generated at a high frequency, such as providing directions to people during events or in disaster situations. In order to rapidly process data, such as speed and location, that are generated on a second-to-second basis by huge numbers of cars in motion, the most effective method is to construct a system that uses stream processing to process data in parallel, such as on a car-by-car basis. In order to add to or change the processing program according to service additions and improvements, the current method involves preparing two systems of the same scale in advance, using one for operations, making changes to the other one, and then quickly swapping them out. This method required both systems to be temporarily stopped, however, while the data, such as the speed or position of a car, held in the memory of the system in use, was copied over to the revised system. This made it difficult to produce services that required truly continuous operations, such as the real-time transmission of warnings to connected cars. In addition, because new processing programs were obtained from the database, known as a repository, congestion resulted with the numerous queries from large volumes of processing units, delaying overall processing. Figure 2: Differences between the existing technology and Dracena’s non-disruptive update technology. Credit: Fujitsu Figure 1: Real-time services via the collection, analysis, and utilization of data from connected cars. Credit: Fujitsu Explore further Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of the Dynamically Reconfigurable Asynchronous Consistent EveNt-processing Architecture (Dracena), a stream processing architecture that can add or change content while processing large volumes of IoT data, without stopping. With recent advances in IoT technologies, it is expected that many real-time services will be created to utilize the large volumes of data flowing into the cloud from various devices across factories, homes, and social infrastructure. In the progression towards autonomous driving with connected cars, researchers are considering the analysis of the vast amounts of information, such as speed and location, generated from vehicles, which can then be presented to drivers, in the form of warnings, for example. The idea is to bring together those working on projects that make life worth living with those trying to make sure that the technology of the future works for the interest of society.”AI can be an enormous force for good,” Schwarzman told The Associated Press. “But on the downside it can lead to high unemployment. It could destabilize society if it happens too fast.”Schwarzman compared the rise of AI to the rise of the internet, which was launched by computer scientists who thought it was fun and interesting.
