first_img2019 marks the passing of 100 years since the Bentley brothers first began selling French cars in a small suburb of northwest London. The company has come a long way since, solidifying its reputation as makers of some of the most desirable luxury cars in the world. To mark its centenary, Bentley has revived the Flying Spur badge to create what it believes is “the finest super-luxury sports sedan ever built.” It’ll serve as a rival to the Porsche Panameras and Mercedes-AMG S63s of this world and “pushes the boundaries of both technology and craftsmanship to deliver segment-defining levels of performance and refinement,” according to a statement released Tuesday. It’s so special, Bentley says, that the company even designed a new emblem for it. Enlarge ImageThe Flying Spur’s body panels are made entirely of aluminum. Bentley Rather than borrowing underpinnings from elsewhere in the family, the new Bentley Flying Spur is built on a brand-new platform. The all-aluminum bodywork is bold and confident in its styling, with numerous cues borrowed from the Continental GT. The giant grille, muscular lines and aforementioned Flying B mascot (electronically deployed and illuminated, naturally) are obvious highlights, but the car is littered with exquisite details that shows a lot of time and energy has been spent making it special.We suspect it’s possible to own this car for many months and still be discovering new trinkets, details and flourishes. Highlights, and there are many, include the cut-crystal effect detailing on the LED matrix headlights, the three-dimensional diamond quilted leather or wood door inserts, and the diamond knurling on the interior air vents. These, we’re told, required a new software algorithm to be invented in order to facilitate their layout on the complex curves on the ducts. All of this is, of course, totally unnecessary, but very beautiful all the same. The new Bentley Flying Spur is a large car, measuring 208.8 inches in length and 77.3 inches in width. It tips the scales at 5,371 pounds, making it as heavy as the company’s Bentayga SUV. Thankfully it’s blessed with an abundance of power from a twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter, W12 engine that produces 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough for a sports car-baiting 3.7-second acceleration time to 60 miles per hour. How it also manages a 207-mph top speed — that’s well north of what your average Lamborghini Huracan can manage — is anyone’s guess. 12 Photos Bentley Porsche Lamborghini Power is sent to all four wheels via the same eight-speed, ZF-sourced, dual-clutch transmission Bentley uses in the Continental GT. Those of you brave enough to seek the Flying Spur’s top speed will find it in sixth gear, with seventh and eighth, the overdrive gears, reserved for obtaining the best economy. That figure is currently unconfirmed, but expect a fuel tank large enough for a 500-mile range.Unlike the previous Flying Spur, which used a fixed, 40:60 front/rear power split, the new transmission is a clutched system, which sends most of the engine’s torque to the rear axle. This, Bentley is keen to point out, gives the front end a much lighter feel, one that is eager to change direction “almost at the speed of thought.” Of course, slippery conditions underfoot will cause drive to be sent to the front axle on demand, delivering fully automatic active all-wheel drive when circumstances dictate.Various drive modes are available. Comfort and Bentley modes send up to 354 pound-feet of torque to the front axle to facilitate greater traction and all-weather drivability, while in Sport, front axle torque is limited to 206 pound-feet. The remainder is sent to the rear wheels in a manner that will allow quite un-Bentley-like angles of slip in what essentially amounts to a drift mode. Bentley At the car’s unveiling, Bentley’s designers were keen to recount tales of the Flying Spur pulling off Ken Block-spec backward-entry powerslides, tires fully lit through the snow and ice phase of its testing. The system purportedly gives you enough leeway to showboat spectacularly, though not enough rope to hang yourself should you run out of talent.The Flying Spur should also acquit itself well in driving situations that don’t call for tire smoke. This new model features electronic all-wheel steering, which serves the purpose of improving stability at highway speeds, as well as increasing maneuverability in tight spots. Around town, the rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction to the fronts, effectively reducing the wheelbase. At highway speeds, the system steers the rear wheels in the same direction as the fronts, providing more confidence when moving quickly. We can’t tell you about ride comfort at this stage, but this is a Bentley, so the smart money is on it being buttery smooth, particularly in light of the fact it uses continuously regulated three-chamber air springs. A quartet of ride height sensors continuously measure the distance between the axle and the body. If any part of the car is higher or lower than it should be, the air volume in the springs is corrected in order to restore the normal ride height. Bentley This works in conjunction with Bentley Dynamic Ride System — a 48-volt system that controls an actuator unit, that alters the stiffness of the antiroll bars to help keep the car flat through bends.Of course, there will be many owners who may never actually get to drive the Flying Spur, preferring instead to be driven. Those who do ride as passengers certainly won’t consider themselves to be missing out. The wheelbase is a handy 125.8 inches, so there’s plenty of room front and rear. Inside, you’ll find an abundance of the latest technology, all of which is stunningly well-integrated. The main feature is a 12.3-inch display in the center of the dashboard which, like the display in the latest Continental GT, rotates to reveal driver gauges or a blank panel that allows the dashboard to flow uninterrupted across the full length of the cabin. Whether it’s the rear seat massage function, climate control, mood lighting or remotely deploying the Flying B mascot.Three audio systems are on offer, including a standard 10-speaker, 650-watt, entry-level model, and a Bang & Olufsen 1,500-watt, 16-speaker setup with illuminated grilles. But if you want to push the boat out, there’s also a Naim for Bentley 2,200-watt, 19-speaker setup with active bass transducers built into the front seats, allowing you to literally feel the bass through your backside.The whole thing feels exceptionally well put together, as you’d expect from Bentley, and we expect it’ll be a stunningly effective alternative to the typical GTs and high-performance SUVs of this world. At some point however, as the climate changed, our ancestors shifted their diet to include grasses and sedges. Previous evidence had shown that a Paranthropus boisei hominin had existed by eating mostly plants, but carbon dating had shown that individual to have lived approximately 2.8 million years ago. The A. bahrelghazali tooth fossils in this new study are from 3 to 3.5 million years ago, pushing back the date that our ancestors came down out of the trees and began eating C4 grasses, though it’s not clear if they were eating actual grass blades or the roots and tubers that support such plants.A. bahrelghazali stood approximately five feet tall (similar in size to modern chimpanzees) and walked on two legs. It also had a projecting jaw with powerful muscles and large teeth that enabled it to grind plant material to aid digestion. During its time, the part of African where it lived was covered with lakes, floodplains and wooded grasslands, which would lead quite naturally to a change in eating habits if a pattern of living on the ground as opposed to trees developed.Grasses and sedges are generally high fiber foods that also have complex starches and some even have tissue that also offers nutrients, thus, A. bahrelghazali would have been able to survive on such a diet despite not having evolved a sophisticated plant processing digestive system such as that seen with modern cows.The researchers acknowledge that because there is so little fossil evidence to work with, it is possible that the carbon levels found in the tooth fossils came from eating animals that consumed C4 plants, but thus far there is no other evidence to suggest that was the case. The Koro Toro hominin fossils were found in argillaceous sandstone levels along with abundant grazing and aquatic faunal elements that, in combination, indicate the presence of open to wooded grasslands and stream channels associated with a greatly enlarged Lake Chad. In such an environment, the most abundant C4 plant resources available to A. bahrelghazali were grasses and sedges, neither of which is usually considered as standard great ape fare. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevFluids.4.071901 Last year, a team at the University of Edinburgh published the results of their study on the flight of dandelion seeds, conducted using cameras and miniature wind tunnels. They discovered that the unique design of the pappus—the parachute-looking bristles—allowed the seeds to float on the wind in a very efficient manner. They found that as the pappus floats along, the spines channel the air around them in such a way as to form a vortex in the pappus’s wake. And because the air pressure is lower in the vortex, the pappus and its seed cargo are able to remain aloft longer than they would otherwise. In this new effort, the researchers sought to better understand the role of the number of spines in creating the vortex and in maintaining flight stability.To better understand the flight behavior of the pappus, the researchers created models to mimic its behavior using equations from fluid dynamics. In their paper, they describe their models as collections of rods connected together in a way that was similar to the spokes on a bicycle wheel. first_imgPeople who are happy and confident about their appearance are more satisfied with their sex lives, have better self-esteem and enjoy healthy relationships with their spouses, a study reveals. According to the researchers, body image is strongly linked to overall life satisfaction and feelings about romantic relationships.“The study shows that men’s and women’s feelings about their weight and appearance play a major role in how satisfied they are with their lives overall,” said lead study author David Frederick from Chapman University in the US. The findings are consistent with the emphasis placed on the importance of being slender for women and for appearing athletic and lean for men.  “It would seem, therefore, that we still have a long way to go before we achieve the goal of being truly happy with their bodies,” Frederick added in the paper published in the journal Body Image. The team analysed more than 12,000 participants between ages 18 and 65 years and asked questions focused on personality, beliefs about romantic relationships, self-esteem, television viewing and personal characteristics. The panchayat polls of May will go done in the history of Bengal politics as one of the most violent elections that the state witnessed since the inception of Panchayat Raj in 1978. Even though the TMC won the polls by bagging nearly 85 per cent of the rural seats, it couldn’t breathe easy over the BJP making inroads in the Junglemahal districts of Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura and West Midnapore. The unease could be easily sensed in the ruling camp as it shunted out two ministers who hailed from those areas for alleged under performance. Buoyed by the BJP’s performance in the rural polls where it won more than 7,000 seats in the panchayats, party chief Amit Shah has set a target of winning at least 22 of 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Killing of BJP workers in post-panchayat poll violence in areas where the party had performed well drew the ire of its central leadership, which not only launched a countrywide stir against the TMC government but also organised several rallies and programmes by top leaders, who vowed to oust Banerjee in the next elections. The TMC countered, accusing the BJP of spreading the poison of communalism across the state as party supremo Banerjee toured the country and met leaders of various opposition parties in a bid to put up a united fight against the BJP in the next Lok Sabha polls. She floated the idea of a federal front of regional parties and proposed one-to-one fight against the BJP across the country to ensure maximum polling of anti-BJP votes. The TMC in a bid to showcase the unity of the opposition front called for a rally of opposition parties on January 19. It, however, has ruled out any possibility of alliance with the Congress in Bengal by repeatedly stating its desire to contest in all the 42 Lok Sabha seats of the state. On the opposition front, the West Bengal Congress unit witnessed a change of guard with old horse Somen Mitra being brought back as state party chief, replacing Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a bitter critic of TMC. The CPI(M)-led Left Front on the other hand continued to erode both politically and electorally as its vote share continued to slide in all the elections that took place during the year. Both the Left Front and the CPI(M) seem to be in a dilemma over the issue of alliance with the Congress in the state. The Left Front allies such as Forward Bloc and RSP had threatened to quit the front if it decides to go ahead with the alliance or understanding with the Congress. first_img By: Mike Blanchfield and Stephanie Levitz Source: The Canadian Press Share Surprisingly fewer Canadians are being blocked at the U.S. land border under Trump OTTAWA — Fewer Canadians are being turned away at the U.S. land border in recent months despite mounting concerns that Donald Trump’s immigration policies are making it much harder to cross, The Canadian Press has learned.Refusals of Canadians at American land crossings dropped 8.5% between October and the end of February compared with the same five-month period a year earlier, according to U.S. government statistics.The total number of Canadian travellers denied entry also dropped: 6,875 out of 12,991,027 were refused entry, a refusal rate of 0.05 per cent.Between October 2015 and February 2016, 7,619 out of 13,173,100 Canadian travellers were denied entry to the U.S., a refusal rate of 0.06 per cent.The figures, confirmed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, contrast with recent anecdotal reports of Canadians denied entry into the U.S., with many placing the blame on the policies of the Trump administration, including its controversial attempts to ban arrivals from several predominantly Muslim countries.A further breakdown of the border data shows a sharp drop in Canadian refusals at the U.S. border in the first two months of this year as 2,600 Canadian travellers were denied entry, compared with 3,500 for the same two-month period of 2016.But Canadian immigration and civil liberties advocates caution the numbers don’t tell the whole story.Immigration lawyer Lorne Waldman said he is fielding more calls than ever from people planning a trip to the U.S. and wanting to make sure they have the paperwork they need. first_imgCampaigners have welcomed the decision of a controversial right-wing writer and free schools advocate to resign from the board of the government’s new higher education watchdog, and say he should never have been appointed.Toby Young’s resignation came just hours after disabled Tory MP Robert Halfon called on his own government to reverse its decision to appoint the journalist to the board of the Office for Students.There was shock and anger among many disabled people last week when Toby Young was appointed to the board, despite writing articles that included “insulting” and “extremist” comments about inclusive education and eugenics.There had also been outrage at years of misogynist and homophobic remarks Young had made on social media, which he has now deleted from his Twitter account.Simone Aspis, policy and campaigns coordinator for The Alliance for Inclusive Education (ALLFIE), said ALLFIE welcomed Young’s resignation.  But she said he should “never have been appointed in the first place, never mind being forced to resign, bowing to public pressure”.   She said: “Toby Young, who is against the inclusion of disabled pupils in mainstream education, should never have been appointed in the first place, especially when his views are incompatible with the government’s obligations to promote disabled people’s human rights to inclusive education under article 24 [on inclusive education] of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”Halfon, a former education minister who now chairs the education select committee, had told fellow MPs on Monday of the “quite dark articles” in which Young had supported “progressive eugenics” and written about disabled people and working-class students*.Halfon said: “I find this incredibly dark and very dangerous stuff, and I suggest that [Jo Johnson, the universities minister] looks again at this appointment because I do not think it will give students confidence.”Hours later, Young published an article on the website of the right-wing magazine, The Spectator, in which he said his appointment had become a “distraction” from the “vital work” of the OfS and that he was standing down from its board.He insisted that he was “a passionate supporter of inclusion and helping the most disadvantaged”, but added that “some of the things I said before I got involved in education, when I was a journalistic provocateur, were either ill-judged or just plain wrong – and I unreservedly apologise”.But the resignation came after the prime minister, Theresa May, and the universities minister, Jo Johnson, had both defended his appointment and insisted that he should not be sacked.Johnson suggested to MPs that he had not seen the article on progressive eugenics, telling Halfon that he would “look carefully” at the article, but insisting that Young had “expressed his regret” and had “apologised unreservedly for comments that have been made in some cases going back to the 1980s”.He said that neither he nor the Department for Education were aware of the many offensive messages Young had posted on Twitter until after he had been appointed.Halfon had been one of two Tory select committee chairs who criticised the appointment.Dr Sarah Wollaston, chair of the health committee, told MPs on Monday that Young’s comments “do cross a line and are indicative of an underlying character”.Maria Eagle, a former Labour minister for disabled people, said it was “quite right” that he had resigned.She had told MPs before his resignation: “As a former minister for disabled people, I am appalled by some of his recently expressed views about the place of disabled people in our society.“The minister has said that many of Mr Young’s misogynistic tweets were from many years ago, but his views about disabled people are very recent indeed.“How can the minister appoint somebody who thinks so little of the contribution of disabled people to our society to such an important position? Does he not agree that it is indefensible?”A Department for Education (DfE) spokesman said: “We can confirm that Toby Young has decided to resign from the board of the Office for Students.“Everyone appointed to the board brings valuable experience which will be vital to the role of the new higher education regulator and we remain confident it will deliver for students.”But DfE has refused to comment on whether Johnson had now read the eugenics article, as the universities minister has now been appointed to a post in the Department for Transport as part of this week’s ministerial reshuffle.*Five years ago, in an article for The Spectator about plans to bring back O-levels, Young wrote of how “inclusive” was a “ghastly, politically correct” word, which meant that schools had to have “wheelchair ramps… and a Special Educational Needs Department that can cope with everything from Dyslexia to Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy”.He added: “If [Michael] Gove is serious about wanting to bring back O-levels the government will have to repeal the Equality Act because any exam that isn’t ‘accessible’ to a functionally illiterate troglodyte with a mental age of six will be judged to be ‘elitist’ and therefore forbidden by Harman’s Law.”He later added a footnote that claimed he was not opposed to including disabled people in mainstream education and suggested that critics had misunderstood him.He has also written, in another article, published in 2015, of how he is in favour of “progressive eugenics”, arguing that “it is not through changing the culture that we will be able to solve the chronic social problems besetting the advanced societies of the West, but through changing people’s genes”.He adds: “What I’m proposing is a form of eugenics that would discriminate in favour of the disadvantaged.“I’m not suggesting we improve the genetic stock of an entire race, just the least well off.“This is a kind of eugenics that should appeal to liberals – progressive eugenics.”Picture: Toby Young being interviewed on Channel 4 News in 2014last_img read more

The recent allegations that researchers funded by the German car industry tested the effects of diesel fumes on humans and monkeys has raised serious questions about research ethics in the corporate world. Instead, they often are replaced with a central aim of advancing profits. This does not necessarily mean there are not secondary social benefits in some cases. With diesel fume emissions, developing and testing technologies to reduce harmful emissions might be considered to have these secondary benefits in terms of improving public health and the environment. Even a significant future benefit might not offset serious harm. And in the case of the diesel tests, there are very real and severe risks associated with exposure to fumes. Whether the tests exposed subjects to greater levels of fumes than they might otherwise experience (such as walking down the street in daily life) would be important to know in order to assess these levels of potential harm. A greater than normal exposure requires proportionally greater potential benefits. But given what we know about the harm from diesel fumes, it is unlikely that such extra risk could be justified by a modest potential improvement in public health.Another way of justifying the exposure to risks and harms in research is to appeal to the consent given by the research subject. If you volunteer and you are properly informed about the risks then why shouldn’t you take part, despite the potential harm? You might see any payment you receive for volunteering as more valuable than being free from the risk. Or you might simply want to altruistically contribute to a greener world.Yet in cases where potential harm is particularly severe, we might still want to limit people’s freedom to consent. There may be limits that we think we should not cross in society and that to ask someone to expose themselves to significant risks for the sake of research is a step too far. In corporate research, where participants motivated by how much reward they are offered rather than potential therapy or social benefit, allowing people to undergo harm may even be seen as devaluing them as human beings.Corporate research is very demanding upon our system of ethical decision-making because of the lack of focus on benefit to individuals or society. When the research involves substances that are known to be severely dangerous, it is extremely difficult to justify exposing people to them, even with all of the ethical arguments about benefiting the greater good and the right to consent. And because animal subjects can’t give consent, the research would have to have even more worthwhile aims to justify exposing them to risk and harm. These tests were carried out by scientists on behalf of the now-disbanded European Research Group of Environment and Health in the Transport Sector (EUGT), which was funded by Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW. The aim was to observe and record the pollutant effect of emissions from diesel cars using modern exhaust-cleaning technology.Yet, even if the aim of the research was to show that diesel fumes are less harmful than previously considered, there still exists substantial evidence that diesel fumes are harmful to health. No one, not even car manufacturers, is claiming that diesel exhaust fumes are entirely harmless.Ethically sound research brings huge benefits to society, saves lives and advances knowledge. But research always comes at a cost, ranging from resources and time used through to the direct risk of harm for subjects. So, the central ethical question is always: are these costs justified by the potential benefits of the research? When these costs become skewed too far, particularly where people have been exposed to unjustifiable harm, we end up with research scandal.In the case of the diesel fume tests, the most pressing question is whether exposing monkeys and humans to harm can be justified against the benefits of the research. When administering substances known to be dangerous, the potential benefits would have to be significant in order justify such exposure. This can happen, for example, in cases where the research is therapeutic. Exposing volunteers to newly developed drugs that might end up hurting them can be justified on the basis that they might also benefit, or that society more generally will. Now, Fujitsu has developed a new stream processing architecture that automatically switches to a newly provided data processing program when a parallelized data processing job has been completed, by separating stream processing into data reception processing and actual data processing so that data reception processing and current data processing are not stopped (patent pending). As a result, in a simulation of the reception of a few dozen bytes of data per second from one million vehicles, Fujitsu has confirmed that this architecture is able to continue processing streaming data while adding or changing processing programs, with an average delay increase volumes of five milliseconds or less. Fujitsu Laboratories is looking to commercialize this technology during fiscal 2018 on the Mobility IoT Platform, offered by Fujitsu Limited, and extend it to other industry areas. Details of this technology were presented at DEIM2018 (the Forum on Data Engineering and Information Management), a conference being held in Awara, Fukui Prefecture, Japan, from March 4.Development BackgroundWith the recent development of IoT technologies, data has begun to be gathered from all sorts of objects and collected in datacenters, and it is expected that by analyzing and utilizing this, a variety of new services will be created. In the case of connected cars, for example, it is thought that by collecting, analyzing, and utilizing data from automobiles in real time, it will be possible to relieve congestion, assist drivers, and improve the safety of autonomous driving (figure 1). Details of the Newly Developed TechnologyNow, Fujitsu Laboratories has developed Dracena, an architecture that can modify the processing programs of a system while it is operating, without halting operations. With this technology, when changing or adding data processing contents, this architecture distributes the new data processing program as a message, in the same way data is distributed, to each individual processing unit, called an object, such as the processing unit for each car. This eliminates the impact on overall processing speed due to the concentration of queries on the repository. Moreover, by separating intra-object message reception processing and data processing in this architecture, the system is able to add in the new data processing program without stopping the message reception processing or the existing data processing, and then have all objects change over to the new data processing program with the same timing. This has enabled Fujitsu Laboratories to create a stream processing architecture in which the data processing program can be added to or changed without stopping, in order to continue parallelized processing without holding back the flow of huge volumes of data for copying (figure 2).The results of a simulated evaluation confirmed that, in a use case in which a few dozen bytes of data are transmitted once each second from one million vehicles, this architecture was capable of continuously providing services when adding a sudden-braking detection service in a situation where the system was already providing a service to detect excessive driving times, with an average delay increase volume of five milliseconds or less. This architecture will enable the rapid provision of real-time services that require uninterrupted operation and that can respond to problems occurring in society, including providing driving assistance for connected cars, supporting energy-saving usage of appliances, providing in-home health and safety monitoring, and providing travel guidance for tourists using smartphones. Moreover, this architecture enables users to adopt a build method in which they first build a base system aimed at simple analysis and utilization, and then gradually add new services. Using this technology in the case of automobiles, for example, it would be possible to begin with a system that reads signs of drunk driving based on steering wheel operation data, and then add new services layer by layer, such as combining this with map data to detect crosswinds at tunnel exits, or combining it with image data to detect the presence of illegally parked cars, which can be expected to improve the efficiency of service development.Fujitsu aims to commercialize this technology during fiscal 2018 as a constituent element of the Mobility IoT Platform offered by Fujitsu Limited. In addition, Fujitsu is looking to extend this technology beyond the mobility field to business areas that require real-time services based on data that is continually generated at a high frequency, such as providing directions to people during events or in disaster situations. In order to rapidly process data, such as speed and location, that are generated on a second-to-second basis by huge numbers of cars in motion, the most effective method is to construct a system that uses stream processing to process data in parallel, such as on a car-by-car basis. In order to add to or change the processing program according to service additions and improvements, the current method involves preparing two systems of the same scale in advance, using one for operations, making changes to the other one, and then quickly swapping them out. This method required both systems to be temporarily stopped, however, while the data, such as the speed or position of a car, held in the memory of the system in use, was copied over to the revised system. This made it difficult to produce services that required truly continuous operations, such as the real-time transmission of warnings to connected cars. In addition, because new processing programs were obtained from the database, known as a repository, congestion resulted with the numerous queries from large volumes of processing units, delaying overall processing. With recent advances in IoT technologies, it is expected that many real-time services will be created to utilize the large volumes of data flowing into the cloud from various devices across factories, homes, and social infrastructure. first_imgLONDON (Reuters) – British police said they had arrested the brother of a suicide bomber following his extradition to London from Libya, on suspicion of helping him plan the deadly 2017 arena attack in the northern city of Manchester. Hashem Abedi, 22, was detained after he landed at a London airport on Wednesday and will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court, though police did not specify when. Salman Abedi blew himself up at the end of a show by U.S. singer Ariana Grande at the Manchester Arena, killing 22 people and injuring more than 500. Police said Hashem Abedi had been charged with murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to cause an explosion likely to endanger life. “He has today been successfully extradited, for offences relating to the Manchester Arena attack,” Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said in a statement. “He was handed over by Libyan authorities to British police officers this morning.
