first_imgWhen we review our recipe for sustainable peace in Liberia, it is not absolute that we have moved in the right direction. That we have moved at all is a marvel given existing bottlenecks of non-ingredient that are readily available around the cooking pot for peace and security. As mentioned, the heart and soul of peace in Africa is tolerance and trust. Most scholars, experts and volunteer peace messengers for peace, transformation and conflict mediation would argue differently. It is our position that understanding the Liberian conflict and its aftermath is essential as a recipe for sustainable peace and security. It is our belief that, to do this without compromising the process, there is a need for engagement with young people as an important strategy. There would always be an eternal quest for youth. The only cohort that fails to recognize this essential recipe for peace is the young people. Therefore, it is critical, at this period of our development to engage young people in a meaningful manner as an involvement that supports.Liberia, like most countries with young population of over two million youth, would have to rely on young people even to elect its government officials. There is just no other option to the inclusion of young people. A sustainable peace and security in Liberia depends on young people. Their active participation in peacebuilding initiatives, systems, mechanisms and programmes is critical to the attainment of lasting peace and prosperity. At Messengers of Peace-Liberia, our peace programme incorporates the volunteering spirit of young people; their energy and support are basic ingredients that make our programme come to life. We also recognize that without the meaningful involvement and active participation of young people through access to basic information, supplies, funds and services, gains for sustainable peace and security would be eroded as young people would find other sources, such as activities that might lead to violence and insecurity, to address their basic needs. The risk posed by the non-involvement or tacit involvement of young people in peace and security matter is too high and should not be ignored. As mentioned during the official launch of UNSCR 2250, rallying government, non-government, international donor community and the private sector to support the inclusion of young people in peace and security initiative is an important strategy. Thus far, several organizations have made official commitments to implementing the UNSCR 2250 and we look forward to working with our key principal stakeholders. If you’re touched by the launch of the UNSCR 2250 last week and you would like to make contribution or commitment to #youth4peace, please do not hold back your inputs-join us and support the involvement of young people in peace and security. We hope that we can count on you. We need to unlock the peace knowledge of young people for their rapid involvement in peace and security matters.Until next week, when we continue our dialogue among Peace Messengers-What is your recipe for peace, it is Peace First, Peace above all else. May Peace prevail on earth!Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgA GAA club giving away a new €200,000 home in Donegal has gone global with record interest from around the world just 24 hours before the draw is made. The St Eunan’s club in Letterkenny is running its TENTH house giveaway with proceeds from the €100-a-ticket draw tomorrow night going towards developing their grounds in the town. And at one stage yesterday there were queues outside a local estate agent’s office which has become the club’s headquarters for the weekend. “The deadline for buying a ticket is 9pm this Sunday and there’s been a frenzy of activity both locally and from all over the world,” said Draw co-ordinator and local solicitor Ciaran Haran.“We set up a dedicated website at gaahousedraw.com and sales of tickets there are coming in thick and fast. This morning (Saturday) we could see purchases from all over Ireland, across England and Scotland and also from New York, Boston, Chicago, Melbourne, Sydney and even one from Bangkok.“If anyone wants to see where the Donegal diaspora is, they just have to look at where our tickets have been sold in the past few days. It’s incredible. We even sold tickets in Brazil and Argentina a couple of weeks ago.”The draw takes place at Letterkenny’s Mount Errigal Hotel tomorrow night (Sunday). “We will be uploading the results on social media so that everyone who has bought a ticket locally in Donegal or around the world can log on to see if they’ve landed the big prize – a brand new 3-bedroom A-rated home in the heart of Letterkenny.“We have some great runners-up prizes including a Med cruise too.”For club member and estate agent Brendan McGlynn, queues outside his office have caused a stir.“We’ve certainly never had a queue for a free house,” he laughed.“The whole town across our two parishes in Letterkenny has come together because St Eunan’s is at the heart of the community and people know any profits we make on ticket sales goes right back into the club. That’s the GAA ethos. “We’ve been humbled by the support we’ve had from GAA families across Ireland and around the globe. There are more than 30 clubs across Donegal and members of every single one of them have bought tickets. GAA people support GAA people.”The winner of the last draw – in 2017 – was Justin Brett. The County Sligo software developer bought two tickets online from his then home in London.Tickets can be bought for the 2019 draw up until 9pm on Sunday on gaahousedraw.comThe new three-bedroom home – complete with solar panels – is situated in a new housing development at Rann Mór, a five minute walk from Letterkenny town centre. first_img20 February 2007The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) is driving job creation in the Western Cape by ensuring that its staff are trained to meet industry requirements.According to a new report commissioned by the CTICC, 2 343 people were directly employed in the province because of the centre during 2006, a figure that is expected to rise to 3 636 in 2007. The centre was also responsible for 3 058 indirect jobs in 2006, expected to increase to 5 102 in 2007.Approximately 1 500 casual staff members have worked at the centre since its inception, with some 600 staff being employed at any one time. On average casual employees remain with the centre for 16 months – working in the areas of catering, operations and maintenanceThe CTICC and the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (Fedhasa) jointly conducted the report, which looked into the training of current and past casual staff in the three years since the centre began operating.According to the report, the centre’s training programmes bring employees up to internationally recognised standards, and several previously unskilled casual staff members have gone on to permanent positions elsewhere in the industry.“Each year about a third of our casual staff are new faces, replacing the third or so who go on to find jobs elsewhere in the industry,” says the centre’s managing director, Dirk Elzinga. “As many as 78% receive training at the CTICC.”According to the report, one in four companies in the hospitality industry have employed, or currently employ, staff with CTICC experience. Seventy-two percent of all hospitality employers also said that working experience at the CTICC was an important factor on an applicant’s CV.“We also had very positive feedback from hospitality employers towards people with working experience at the CTICC,” says Elzinga. To increase the career potential of its casual staff, the centre is implementing a training programme incorporating a Passport to Success, outlining the disciplines in which the casual staff member has been trained. The “passport” will serve as a reference and be recognised by other hospitality employers who participate in the project.“The CTICC passport will make the training and skills more tangible for people in terms of finding a new job when they leave the centre,” Elzinga says.SouthAfrica.info reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest USDA pegged the Sept. 1 soybean stocks at 191 million bushels. Traders had estimated soybean stocks at 205 million bushels. Last year soybean stocks were 92 million bushels. USDA estimated corn stocks as of Sept. 1 at 1.731 billion bushels. Trader estimates for corn stocks were 1.739 billion bushels, considerably above those of last year at 1.232 billion bushels. USDA put wheat stocks at 2.089 billion bushels. Trader estimates were 2.149 billion bushels.Soybean production for 2014 was lowered to 3.927 billion bushels, down from the January estimate of 3.969 billion bushels. The trade was looking for production to be reduced, no surprises there.Wheat production for 2015 was estimated at 2.052 billion bushels, down from the previous estimate of 2.136 billion bushels. Both the hard red winter wheat (Kansas) and the soft red winter (Ohio and the eastern cornbelt) wheat production were reduced from previous estimates in August.Prior to the report corn was up 4 cents, soybeans up 10 cents, wheat down 2 cents. Twenty minutes after the report corn was down 3 cents, soybeans up 2 cents, wheat up 4 cents.Note that this USDA report is one that flies under the radar for many producers. One, producers have been busy with harvest and extremely focused to see that continue with as few glitches as possible. Second, it is outside the traditional monthly report timelines that are the 10th to 15th   each month.  This report details grain stocks in the U.S., on farm and off farm as of Sept. 1.  Aug. 31 was the marketing year end for corn and soybeans. Also, USDA will update 2015 wheat production in the U.S.In addition, USDA tends to revise the previous years’ soybean U.S. production with this report. For nine of the past 11 years USDA has lowered the previous year’s soybean production on Sept. 30.  It is almost dead even as to how trader’s estimates for grain stocks compare to the actual USDA numbers. For the past 10 years, USDA’s numbers for both corn and soybeans have been above trader estimates in six years, and below the other four years.Market news could be lacking for the next week. The markets in China will be closed from Thursday to next Wednesday as they are on holiday. It will be interesting to see if additional soybeans sales to China are announced this week. Most likely no.The weather is changing as we head into October tomorrow. The next 4-5 days will provide below normal temperatures across Ohio and the Midwest. Farmers in Ohio have welcomed the break that the rains on Tuesday provided. It allows for rest and machinery repairs. The two week forecast is favorable for harvest in Ohio. Expect that lines will get longer as corn moves to town. So far in September many report that elevator lines are not there and trucks going to town are making quick turnarounds.Last Thursday the US and China inked an agreement detailing that China would be buying 13.2 million tons of soybeans from the US. Exact details were lacking when the soybeans would be delivered. Would it be all for the 15-16 marketing year? Or would some be in the 16-17 marketing year? The market has been extremely disappointed at the small amount of sales reported to date since last week. Many but not all of Ohio’s producers received some much needed rain on Tuesday. For much of Ohio it had been three weeks or longer since the last rainfall. Precipitation maps indicate much of Ohio had at least a half inch of rain. The northwest part of Ohio received little rainfall in stark contrast to that seen in May and June. Much of the southern half of Ohio received at least an inch. This morning I was really surprised when I dumped my gauge to see 1.9 inches of rain fell yesterday. This front that came through also brought the potential of additional rain later this week. That was not in the forecast on Monday.Harvest is quickly progressing across Ohio. Many central Ohio producers have harvested at least 50% of their soybeans. Yields for Ohio have ranged anywhere from 40 to 70 bushels. Many in southern Ohio are seeing soybean yields better than expected; 50 to 70 bushels have been very common. Corn harvest is not as far along as soybeans. Corn yields will be all over the board with those in northwest Ohio seeing very disappointing yields. Too much rain is the culprit. The market quickly returns to harvest progress, the farmer sell rate, and an ever present eye towards China. Big resistance numbers for corn are $3.95 to $4.05 and soybeans at $9.08 to $9.20. Lines at elevators could be a big problem if excess corn moves to town this fall. With all of the storage bins that have been put on the farm the last five years, those corn lines may be less than many have expected.last_img read more

first_imgGetting started in filmmaking isn’t cheap, so what can you do when you need actors, but you don’t have the budget for them?I’m a member of various online groups where local filmmakers post urgent, last-minute crew vacancies or casting calls. In the more casual groups, it’s not uncommon to see a post from a filmmaker or film student urgently looking for a camera operator with their own kit, or for an actor to fill an uncast role . . . and, at the bottom of the listing, to find unpaid but travel and food included. These posts often get angry emotes, and honestly, my reaction is instinctively negative, too. But why? I’ve been in this position many times. And even when working on my own passion projects, I often pay my friends — who are actors — with a set “thank you” fee because, without financial backing, that’s all I can give.Filmmaking isn’t cheap. Let’s assume you’re a lone wolf and will initially be acquiring all of the gear yourself. That means the camera, the lenses, audio, lighting, and perhaps a hardware upgrade on your desktop computer — and the required peripherals. Even when purchasing low-grade, used equipment, it’s still likely to cost $5,000. In short, it’s quite an investment. (Alternatively, you may have access to this equipment from your school or university, but you still lack the finances to hire professional actors.)A popular route for first-time filmmakers is to use friends and family as actors. However, it won’t be long before your viewing audience realizes that the actors on screen aren’t actors at all, and a bad performance is the quickest way to disengage your audience. This skit from SNL is reminiscent of how my films — at age 17 — must have appeared.Likewise, family and friends (unless creatives themselves) sometimes fail to see the importance of fluidity on a shoot. For example, the mindset of “Oh, it won’t matter if I’m an hour late; it’s only Lewis,” when in all actuality, that hour was all the time we had to film at that location.Hence, as an up-and-coming filmmaker, it’s best to acquire a dedicated up-and-coming actor to partner with. However, how are you supposed to hire an actor if you’ve exhausted your budget? Luckily, aspiring actors will often work with aspiring filmmakers in a form of barter system. That is, they act for you, and you give them footage for their portfolio. With no-budget short films, actors will often accept no pay, no food, and quite often no travel expense to get that extra appearance logged in the book. Then, they spend much of the day waiting around while the crew assembles the shot. In short, aspiring actors have to go through a lot of crap (for very little), yet without these actors, you wouldn’t have a film. Here are a few straightforward steps you can take to bring an actor on-board — and make sure they have a rewarding experience.HonestyImage via Studio 72.State what the actors will receive outright in the casting call. Don’t leave out that it’s unpaid. Be transparent and honest. Don’t say that this could lead to paid work in the future; it’s a load of rubbish, and nine times out of ten, it doesn’t. Don’t try to sweeten the pitch by saying you’ll give the actor social media and IMDb credits, to create the illusion you’re offering more than just travel expenses. You want to clearly state that the actor will receive the clips they star in as a digital download/DVD or a copy of the entire film. However, I’ve heard several horror stories where aspiring actors have said the director of the project told them to take their footage directly from the DVD of the film. This is unfair. Many actors do not have access to editing software, and this will leave the actors short of showreel footage.Trade Your ServicesUltimately, hiring an actor to work for free is a trade between the filmmaker and the actor. The director gets the actor’s talent, and the actor receives the reel footage. However, sometimes you can sweeten the deal by throwing in your services. Headshots can be expensive, but if you’re shooting with a DSLR and have a proper lighting kit, you may very well be able to capture headshots. Explain to the talent that you might not be able to replicate the shots that a professional headshot photographer would get, but you can give them something close. Alternatively, you could lend them your editing skills and help them when they have enough clips to put a showreel together.FoodWhen it comes down to entry-level filmmaking, eating seems like a luxury. However, providing a few snacks on location can change the dynamics of a shoot. You can get a bowl of chips, a variety of sandwiches, some fruit, a selection of drinks, and a few sweet snacks for under $50. While this isn’t a feast for kings, it’s enough to put an end to empty stomachs, and it will create a lighter atmosphere on set.Deferred PaymentImage via guruXOX.It’s likely that if you’re reading this article, you’re planning on releasing your film online — or perhaps through a local festival — just to get something out there. In the future, however, you may want to bring in revenue from your content. This could be from monetization, merchandise, or even placing your content behind a paywall like Vimeo’s On Demand. If you’re making money from your content, you’re certainly going to have to pay your talent, as well.Deferred payments allow no-budget filmmakers to produce films when they don’t have the resources to pay the cast and crew upfront; instead, they make payments when the money starts rolling in. When you make agreements like this, it’s best to seek legal advice, as you may face legal ramifications in the unfortunate event that you can’t uphold your end of the agreement.Believe in Your ProjectI would argue that fully believing in the value of your project can be as powerful as all the other tips combined. Even if your funding is so drained that by day three you cannot provide a single bottle of water for your cast, if you truly believe in your project, you will find an actor willing to go out on a limb for you. But, do not abuse this notion. If you’re just starting, and you keep breaking your promises, you’ll find nobody wants to be in your film — paid or not.If you keep these ideas in mind when putting out your next casting call, you’ll start to receive more replies. A good actor can take your film to the next level. In the no-budget filmmaking world, they’re not taken seriously enough. Alfred Hitchcock famously stated: “Actors are cattle! They should be treated as such!” If you choose this approach, you won’t be moving anywhere fast.Cover image via kuzmaphoto.Looking for more filmmaking tips and tricks?
