Sweetening the situation.”Grande also tipped that the album will be coming this summer, and on the 20th of every month she will do something special ahead of its release. On April 20 we got the first single, “No Tears Left To Cry.” On May 20 Grande will perform at the Billboard Music Awards. She also dropped the hint that there’s only a few more 20th dates left, which would put the release date at July or August. The GRAMMY nominee also shared a few track names, including “R.E.M.,” “The Light Is Coming,” “God Is A Woman,” and the lowdown on a short intro track, “Raindrops,” which borrows from a ’50s Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons song called “An Angel Cried.”Grande also hinted that they hid the entire album track list in “the video” — we assume “No Tears Left To Cry” — but the list isn’t in order. first_imgBOSTON, MA — The MBTA and its operating partner for Commuter Rail, Keolis Commuter Services, announced the special $10 Commuter Rail weekend fare pilot will resume on Saturday, January 5. This special weekend fare is available from the first train on Saturday to the last train on Sunday and may be used across all zones and all lines.“Resuming this pilot allows our customers to continue taking advantage of Commuter Rail as a travel option on weekends, while we study the potential for making this program permanent,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “I want to thank our partners at the FTA for working with us to resume this pilot and also acknowledge the enthusiastic response we received from our customers to this initiative.”The special $10 all-weekend fare will be available on the mTicket app, onboard trains (cash or credit card from conductors), and at ticket windows at North, South, and Back Bay stations. The special fare applies to customers age 12 and above; the weekend fare allows adults to travel with 2 children under 12 at no additional cost.“The MBTA’s reduced weekend fare initiative gives passengers a convenient and affordable option to visit a number of great destinations across the greater Boston area,” said Keolis General Manager and CEO David Scorey. “We’re pleased to partner with the MBTA to continue this initiative that encourages new passengers to try Commuter Rail, helps to grow ridership, and promotes an environmentally friendly transit option.”Customers can visit MBTA.com/MassByTrain to explore destinations around the greater Boston area accessible by Commuter Rail and for listings of fun weekend excursions.First piloted during the summer of 2018, the promotional fares were launched with the goal of increasing Commuter Rail ridership and revenue on the weekends when trains have additional capacity. During the 6-month period these fares were available, 180,000 tickets were sold. This represents 23% of weekend sales and a 4.6% increase in weekend revenues compared to the same time period in 2017. While weekend construction impacted direct year-over-year analysis, passenger feedback throughout the summer pilot was very positive.During their first 6 months being offered to passengers, the special fares were marketed digitally, on radio, and in direct mailers to new homeowners as part of a broad, comprehensive marketing program. This marketing program is the result of a ridership and revenue growth partnership between the MBTA and Keolis, a first-of-its-kind contract in the United States, and marketing $10 fares will continue. With the exception of the CapeFlyer, operated through a partnership with the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, and special event trains for destinations such as Gillette Stadium, this pilot applies to all MBTA Commuter Rail services on Saturdays and Sundays.(NOTE: The above press release is from the MBTA.)Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. first_imgVolkswagen may offer VW owners in Germany discounts on new cars if they turn in certain old models affected by the emissions scandal that has rocked Europe’s biggest carmaker, German news agency DPA reported on Sunday.Volkswagen is battling the biggest business crisis in its 78-year history after admitting last month it installed software in diesel vehicles to deceive U.S. regulators about the true level of their toxic emissions. The company has said it would recall around 8.5 million diesel vehicles in Europe that contained such software. The special offers would be available only in Germany, where around 2.4 million of the vehicles to be recalled were sold.Incentives for VW owners to buy new vehicles could help ensure that sales remain stable after the scandal and take pressure off VW dealerships to implement fixes quickly. Each German dealership will have to handle an average of 1,100 recalled vehicles, each of which will require at least an hour and a half of work, DPA said. That could result in a long wait for customers. The offer of discounts for new car buyers may focus on the owners of vehicles with 1.6 litre diesel engines, sources at Volkswagen and VW dealerships said, according to DPA. Those models need hardware changes, a more costly upgrade than the software changes needed for other affected vehicles. No decision had been made on the matter yet, DPA quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying.Volkswagen said in response that it was common for Volkswagen and its dealers to consider special offers for existing customers.last_img read more

first_imgZakir NaikReutersMalaysia’s cabinet discussed the permanent residency of Indian Islamic preacher Zakir Naik on Wednesday, with three ministers demanding his expulsion for allegedly making racially sensitive remarks in the multi-ethnic nation.Naik, who has lived in Malaysia for about three years and faces charges of money laundering and hate speech in India, has come under fire for his recent comments that Hindus in the Southeast Asian country had “100 times more rights” than the Muslim minority in India.Race and religion are sensitive issues in Malaysia, where Muslims make up about 60 percent of its 32 million people. The rest are mostly ethnic Chinese and Indians, most of whom are Hindus. The Malaysian ministers said Naik’s comments may have been aimed at driving a wedge between Muslims and non-Muslims in Malaysia, an allegation that Naik denied.”We have expressed our position, which is that action must be taken and that Zakir Naik should no longer be allowed to remain in Malaysia,” Gobind Singh Deo, minister of communications and multimedia, said in a statement.”The prime minister has taken note of our concerns. We leave it to him to consider the position and to decide soonest possible what will be done to deal with the problem,” he added.M Kulasegaran, minister of human resources, and Xavier Jayakumar, the minister of water, land and natural resources, also released statements urging Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to expel Naik.Naik, who has repeatedly rejected the charges against him in India, said his detractors were quoting him out of context to malign him.”My praise of the Malaysian government for its Islamic and fair treatment of Hindu minorities is being twisted and misquoted to suit political gains and create communal rifts,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.Malaysian state news agency Bernama quoted Mahathir as saying late on Tuesday that Naik cannot be sent back to India due to fears for his safety.”If any (other) country wants to have him, they are welcome,” Mahathir said.India banned Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation in late 2016, accusing him of encouraging and aiding its followers to “promote or attempt to promote feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious communities and groups”.last_img read more

At this stage, the entire campus of the university plunged into darkness due to power failure and the five Shibir activists escaped from the campus.BCL activists again started launching attacks on Shibir activists in various university dormitories when they heard that the five Shibir activists escaped. When contacted, Syed Imam Baker told Prothom Alo that they launched the attacks so that Shibir activists cannot create any chaos on the university campus.University’s students welfare director professor Mohammad Mashiul Haque said the five students should not have been picked up without informing the authorities. “And conducting raids in different dormitories is unwarranted too.”He said the university authorities have formed a four-strong investigation committee led by Electrical and Computer Science Faculty dean professor Koushik Deb.The probe body has been asked to submit its report within seven days.last_img read more

first_imgInternational Organization for Migration (IOM) director general William Lacy Swing has called upon all for redoubling efforts to ensure that support for victims of trafficking becomes a key pillar in their work, reports UNB.”We must redouble our efforts to ensure that support for victims of trafficking becomes a key pillar in our work,” he said in an op-ed marking the World Day against Trafficking in Persons that falls on today, Monday.Swing said businesses should also ensure they have established feedback loops so that they can continually improve reporting mechanisms, protection for whistle-blowers, and prevention of further harm.”More and more companies are coming together to address the risks they face in supply chains, but remediation for victims of trafficking remains a new area of work for the private sector,” he wrote in the article titled “With Public and Private Sectors at Odds, Traffickers Win. Let’s work together to protect its victims.”Terming positive trends encouraging, he said much more needs to be done. “Today, I will focus on a key challenge, which I see as the next frontier in supply chain engagement: mobilizing the private sector to ensure that migrants who have been wronged receive the remedy and justice they deserve.”Beyond strengthening their due diligence, he said, companies can and must take responsibility for harm perpetrated against their workers and ensure that all possible steps are taken to assist victims of trafficking in their recovery – which they can do by working closely with governments, civil society organizations, international organizations, and the victims themselves.Swing said states bear the primary responsibility to address human trafficking and protect trafficked victims. “By establishing stronger connections between private sector and public efforts to help victims of trafficking, together we can do the work of rebuilding broken lives.”Earlier this year IOM, the UN Migration Agency, launched a set of practical guidelines for companies to address this challenge. In line with the United Nations’ “Protect, Respect, and Remedy” Framework, IOM’s Remediation Guidelines describe the many avenues that businesses can take to offer remediation to victims of exploitation, in partnership with local state and non-State actors. These routes include facilitating access to victim services and support systems such as medical or psychosocial care; relocating victims to new job environments; offering voluntary return to countries of origin; support for recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration where possible, said the IOM chief.”But as we mark the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, we are also reminded, sadly, that migrants are too often exposed to disproportionate risks of exploitation and abuse when looking for better employment opportunities away from home,” Swing said.Every year, millions of migrants are trafficked within and across borders and find themselves trapped in forced labour. In some cases, men and women are coerced by force into work, enduring violence, threats or psychological manipulation.Often they find themselves indebted via unfair recruitment processes or employment conditions, all the while facing enormous pressures from their families and communities who may have gone into debt themselves, just to start their job search.Other forms of exploitation only slightly more benign;-having to toil under dangerous conditions, settling for menial wages, facing hidden deductions and unreasonable restrictions during both work and non-work hours.”These abuses, too, harm migrants and violate their rights,” Swing said adding that these types of abuse can occur all along an industry’s supply chain and can be easily concealed among layers of sub-contractors.He said trafficking in persons exists today in every country and every economic sector. “Whether the business is coffee, clothing or construction, this much is clear: no workplace or community is immune to human trafficking.””We must all insist that supply chains are free from human trafficking and other forms of exploitation,” Swing said.He said they are already seeing signs of change and a growing number of companies are taking action in their supply chains; more governments are developing new policies and regulatory mechanisms for greater business accountability.”Civil society also plays a critical role in advocating for migrants’ rights and ensuring they have access to the protection and assistance services they need,” he added.last_img read more

first_imgThe European Union (EU) has said the atmosphere for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of those who have fled their homeland must be put in place. It also asked the Myanmar government to intensify efforts to ensure full, safe and unconditional access to Rakhine State for humanitarian assistance without delay.”The authorities in Myanmar need to take forward swiftly full implementation of the recommendations of the Advisory Commission, including citizenship for the Rohingya population,” said head of the EU delegation to the United Nations ambassador Joao Vale de Almeida. The ambassador made the call while addressing the Security Council Arria formula meeting with Kofi Annan on the Situation in Myanmar in New York on Friday. The EU envoy said those most closely involved – and the wider international community – must remain unflagging in their efforts to address this crisis and the human suffering it is inflicting.Ambassador and permanent representative to the UN Masud Bin Momen said it will be difficult to find a meaningful and lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis without involvement and monitoring by the international community especially without UN Security Council given the previous experience with Myanmar. The root cause of the problem lies with Myanmar and the solution to the crisis also lies there, he said. The Bangladesh ambassador said though the two countries agreed to form a working group to start repatriation process there are some issues that require wider discussions, according to a message received here on Saturday. The EU welcomed state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s clear commitment in her 12 October speech.”The EU stands ready to support Myanmar in this endeavour,” Almeida said urging Myanmar to cooperate fully with the Human Rights Council Independent Fact-Finding Mission and to allow full, safe and unhindered access of its members to Rakhine state without delay. The ambassador said Bangladesh has responded with a great resolve to this crisis to provide essential humanitarian assistance to those displaced by this crisis.”The EU welcomes the initial discussions and commitments between Bangladesh and Myanmar, and encourages both countries to take urgent steps forward to ensure the safe and voluntary repatriation of refugees as soon as possible, in line with the recommendations of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State.””It’s incumbent upon the international community to do everything it can to alleviate the plight of those who have fled and those who remain in Rakhine state,” Almeida said. The ambassador said the EU has responded quickly to the evolving humanitarian crisis. “We’ve provided 18 million euro for the delivery of assistance in Myanmar, of which 8 million euro in Rakhine, and 14.5 million euro in Bangladesh, with 10 million to address needs in Cox’s Bazar.”The EU will co-host a pledging conference in Geneva on 23 October in order to boost international support. It commended the work of the Advisory Commission and said the recommendations made by the Advisory Commission provide a clear blueprint for addressing the substantial security, development and human rights challenges faced in Rakhine state and for improving the lives of those who live there. The EU acknowledged the efforts that have been made to date by the government of Myanmar to support the work of the commission and to take forward the implementation of its recommendations, including through the establishment of a committee to oversee implementation. The EU observed that the unprecedented wave of refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh has rightly galvanised international concern.”The violence and human rights violations that have driven this exodus are not acceptable and must end immediately and the protection of all civilians without discrimination, as well as the full observation of human rights law, must be assured,” said the EU envoy. The EU condemned the serious human rights violations and abuses, as well as disproportionate use of force, carried out by the security forces. It called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice in line with the rule of law. “This applies also for those involved in the attacks committed against members of the Myanmar security forces – attacks which the EU has condemned.”last_img read more

(Thania Sanchez via AP) A 20-year-old man whose pickup collided with a church minibus last month in rural Texas, killing 13 people, told state troopers he had taken prescription medication before driving and had marijuana in his truck, according to court records. The records obtained from Uvalde County showed a state trooper found two whole marijuana cigarettes and five partially smoked ones in Jack Dillon Young’s truck after the March 29 crash that happened on a two-lane highway about 75 miles (120 kilometers) west of San Antonio, the San Antonio Express-News (http://bit.ly/2nBMgAb ) reported Tuesday. An affidavit from another state trooper seeking a blood test for a toxicology report said the trooper had probable cause to believe Young was intoxicated during the collision because the man told a trooper he had taken prescription medication earlier in the day, including clonazepam and the generic forms of Lexapro and Ambien.A phone call to a number listed for Young’s family went unanswered Tuesday. A message left by The Associated Press for the judge who signed the documents was not immediately returned. No charges had been filed in the crash as of Tuesday. District Attorney Daniel Kindred has said it could be more than a month before the investigation file from the Department of Public Safety is forwarded to his office. The collision took place near Garner State Park. The small church bus carrying 14 older congregants from the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels was returning from a retreat.Officials from Uvalde and Real counties confirmed they had received phone calls about a white pickup truck driving erratically and crossing the highway shortly before the wreck. A couple who had been driving behind Young’s pickup filmed his car crossing into the oncoming traffic lane and onto the shoulder. The couple later confirmed they had called the county law enforcement officials and later 911 when the collision occurred. The man later told police and reporters, including the AP, that Young had told him he had been texting before the accident.A National Transportation and Safety Board investigator said Young was not wearing his seatbelt, while most if not all of the 14 church bus occupants had been wearing theirs. Only one passenger in the back row of the bus survived the crash. The NTSB investigation of the crash, which will include a likely cause and any safety recommendations for the future, could take up to a year to complete. Kindred and other officials said that report has no bearing on when or whether criminal charges are filed. Sharelast_img read more

In the video, a ball, lit from within, moves around a virtual environment, shining its light on the other elements in its surroundings, demonstrating a step up in visual representation of real-time light imagery. Most video games use canned lighting, which means the game only has to show what has already been calculated. With the new chip in place, currently known as the Kal-El (Superman’s real name) the light projected is calculated and displayed (on moving objects yet) as the game is in play, something that requires incredible amounts of calculation at incredible speeds. The chip accomplishes this feat via its new quad-core (four processing units in a single component) processing chip. Uploaded prior to the upcoming Computex trade show in Taiwan this week, the video demo of Glowball, as Nvidia has named the video game, shows that Nvidia is now to be considered a major player in the development of cutting edge ARM processors (the 32 bit RISC processors developed by Arm Holding that have come to dominate the mobile or embedded electronics market) moving into direct competition with such big names as Texas Instruments and Qualcomm. It also sheds some light, if you will, on the direction mobile applications are heading. While it’s not known just how much money Nvidia has invested in developing its impressive new chip, it’s safe to say that it was considerably more than it ever has for its graphics chips; a move that demonstrates just how lucrative the mobile market has become. At the trade show, Nvidia demonstrated what a step up the new quad-core chip is by pushing a button on the demo pad that dropped the demo play to dual-core mode; a move that resulted in stilted jerky game movement. If all goes according to plan, Kal-El powered tablets (running on Google Android of course) are expected to be on the market by September, followed shortly thereafter by quad-core smartphones, making them the only such choice for consumers until the competition catches up.last_img read more

first_imgOver the past eight years the IPTV World Forum has been the key global platform leading the debate, development and deployment of IP delivered TV. The show started as small conference for an elite group of visionary industry pioneers, but over time the show has gained momentum, delivering sustained  year on year growth. As the industry expanded and diversified, it has come to represent an even more vibrant and dynamic market than could have ever have been imagined at that founding event. The industry has become more diverse in a number of ways. It has diversified in the number and type of companies that offer a TV service delivered or enhanced though IP. It is no longer the sole domain of telcos: cablecos, satellite and terrestrial broadcasters are all seeking to add compelling enhancements to their services through internet connectivity. So whilst “managed end-to-end telco IPTV” will always be at the core of our coverage, our industry is now about so much more. The business and technical challenges that our community is now wrestling with involve using the flexibility and addressability of IP to deliver a wide array of personalised services. These range from smart TVs and TV apps, to OTT and multiplatform TV services, advanced content discovery and UI, new generations of advertising, the connected home, and the CDNs that underpin all of these. For the last two years this event has carried a slightly evolved brand to reflect this change, with an ampersand inserted between “IP” and “TV”. For the first year this was somewhat subliminally inserted in our logo, and for 2012 far more clearly highlighted in a modernised logo.  We believe this has more accurately reflected the scope of the event, and the focus of our customers, in a market where no clear consensus on new terminology existed. However we have been clear for some years that in time the brand would need to more fully evolve. IPTV as a terminology is now becoming part of our industry heritage, and – to some parts of our market at least  – is associated with their competitors or alternatives. As we transition our brand we believe it is important not to align ourselves with one particular interest group. Our market is awash with alternative terminologies, each with their particular nuanced meanings and specific advocates. We believe our future – and that of the industry – is to bring together those different strands, and more, as we develop a world of connected entertainment. It is important to not only capture the mood of the market, but also to provide a wide enough frame of reference to make the event inclusive of all sectors who might wish to participate in this exciting marketplace. At the same time, we are also seeking to harness the increasingly universal recognition of certain key industry terms. In recent months there has been a mounting media consensus around the term of connected TV, consolidating an increasing wave of interest. It seems that hardly a day passes when you can’t pick up a broadsheet newspaper – or click on a mainstream news website – without seeing feature on connected TV. It would be perverse of us to ignore this trend. The TV Connect brand will more clearly reflect the incredibly rich meeting place that the show has now become. It is an inclusive brand that recognises the diversity of those now participating in the event.  These participants come not only from telcos, cable providers, broadcasters and ISPs, but also from consumer electronics and smart TV companies, content providers, application developers, or other connected entertainment providers such as gaming and music.  A simple glance at the keynotes for the 2012 show evidences this range – from Twitter to MTV, from Sony to NBC and the BBC – and connected entertainment experiences are central to the discussion. The new brand also echoes an industry that has come of age, moving away from an emphasis on technology to one on services and experiences. Whilst at its core our coverage is about IP-enabled TV, it is a testament to the work of the past few years that many of those now speaking at the show are “blind” to technology, in the sense that they take the connectivity platform as a given. The focus is now on service innovation, and building compelling connected entertainment experiences – blending platforms and media to enrich, to personalise,  to differentiate, and ultimately to monetize. As this industry comes of age, we move forward with a brand that more fully reflects the diversity of this dynamic market. We look forward to welcoming you to TV Connect, here are Olympia, on 19th-21st March 2013.Gavin WhitechurchExecutive DirectorInforma Telecoms & Medialast_img read more

first_imgAs Florence lurches across the state, it brings with it many hazards: high-speed winds capable of downing trees, and those same trees falling on power lines. And as of mid-day Friday, there had been four reported fatalities in North Carolina, including a mother and infant who were killed in New Hanover County when a tree fell on their home.Craig Fugate is a former administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He says that the biggest threat from Hurricane Florence could be the rain, with some coastal communities already seeing storm surges as high as 10 feet.“I think again the term life-threatening, catastrophic, flash flooding, needs to be taken seriously,” says Fugate. “The problem is it’s going to be hard to know with certainty which areas will see the heaviest rainfall. That’s why the entire region has to be prepared for this.”And as the storm continues to creep inland, it’s bringing significant rainfall, with many areas of North Carolina under a flash flood watch.“And that’s one of the harder things to forecast,” says Fugate. “We know generally, [and] we’re seeing now forecast range is 20 inches plus or more in some areas, but until that rain starts coming down it’s really hard to tell what the local impacts are going to be.”As of this afternoon, hundreds of people have been rescued from rising waters in New Bern, N.C., and that number is expected to climb.last_img read more

first_imgReviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Jan 9 2019Caring for someone with dementia is one of the most challenging caring roles in today’s society. A new Health and Social Care in the Community study has explored the support and social networks of family carers of people with dementia towards the end of life and the role of the internet in supporting them.In interviews with 20 current and former family carers aged 65 and over in England, carers described a separation of two worlds: their internal caring world and the outside world of society, with varying networks of support. Carers discussed experiencing a spectrum of losses but also a process of reconstruction of life as a carer. The internet helped to provide support, including options to develop new relationships and networks. The internet alone was not enough, however, and human interaction was still needed.”The findings from our work suggest that family carers can feel separated from society, and have to develop new social and support networks,” said lead author Dr. Nathan Davies, of University College London. “As our population ages and internet savvy groups age and become carers themselves, I think we will increasingly see the internet being used by carers as a source of support for them in this difficult caring role. With this we need to emphasize the use and benefits of the internet for social networking for carers whilst also remembering it cannot replace face to face human contact.” Source:https://newsroom.wiley.com/press-release/health-and-social-care-community/study-examines-support-those-caring-loved-one-dementilast_img read more

© 2018 AFP Citation: On chaotic SE Asian roads, local hero Grab zips past Uber (2018, March 26) retrieved 18 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-03-chaotic-se-asian-roads-local.html Uber selling Southeast Asia operations to Grab: report Spanning 10 countries, from wealthy, ultra-organised Singapore to places like Indonesia and the Philippines that are home to traffic-choked cities, coming up with a ride-hailing service for the whole of Southeast Asia was never going to be easy. But Grab’s Malaysian chief executive, Anthony Tan, combined his local knowledge with sharp business sense from his time at Harvard Business School to come up with a service well adapted to the region and quickly raced past Uber. After a years-long fight that cost both companies huge sums as they aggressively slashed fares and rolled out special offers, the California-based company threw in the towel Monday and sold its ride-sharing and food delivery services to Grab for an undisclosed sum.”Grab is more familiar with its home territory, Southeast Asia,” said Song Seng Wun, a regional economist with CIMB Private Bank.”They saw the Uber model and tweaked it to adapt to local conditions, giving Southeast Asians what they want.”In 2015 they added motorbike taxis to their ride-hailing app in Indonesia, where many commuters get around on two wheels due to heavy traffic, helping them to rival local titan Go-Jek, which had pioneered the service.Uber followed slowly up the rear, only adding motorbike taxis to their service in the Indonesian capital a year later, by which time the market was saturated.Uber’s disadvantage was that they lacked local knowledge and relied heavily on the model which had allowed them to lead in developed markets, according to Song.Dramatic expansionWith smartphone ownership exploding across a region that was rapidly growing more affluent, Grab moved fast and expanded aggressively to ensure they were Southeast Asia’s best-known ride-hailing app—they now operate in 195 cities across eight Southeast Asian countries. As they became more successful, they attracted more funding, including $2.5 billion last year from investors including Chinese ride-hailing firm Didi Chuxing and Japan’s SoftBank.By contrast, when they sold off their operations, Uber was operating in just 64 cities in eight Southeast Asian countries.Grab has expanded dramatically from its early days. In 2012 Tan quit his job at the family business—Tan Chong Motor, which distributes Nissan cars in Malaysia and Singapore—and founded taxi-booking app MyTeksi with a friend from Harvard. The name was later changed to GrabTaxi and then just Grab. It now has a huge range of services, from offering private cars and motorbike taxis to renting out coaches, push bikes and electric scooters, to a payment system called GrabPay.Tan himself sounds amazed that his company has done so well. “We are humbled that a company born in Southeast Asia has built one of the largest platforms that millions of consumers use daily,” he said, in a statement announcing Monday’s deal. His next big challenge is Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s biggest market—where he will be taking on former Harvard classmate Nadiem Makarim, the CEO of ride-hailing market leader Go-Jek. Uber may be the world’s biggest ride-hailing company but it was left in the dust in Southeast Asia by homegrown upstart Grab, which knew better how to navigate the chaotic highways and byways of an eclectic region. Overwatch video games will be broadcast live on US television under an agreement by the game maker and Walt Disney Co. to bring eSports to viewers Disney and its ESPN channels will be exclusive partners for broadcasting “Overwatch” matches on television in the US, in the “most significant commitment” they have made to video games as spectator sport, Activision Blizzard eSports league chief Pete Vlastelica told AFP.The alliance is part of an effort to establish “Overwatch” eSports audiences and business models akin to those in traditional sports such as basketball or football.Financial terms of the multiyear deal were not disclosed.Playoff games beginning this week along with finals taking place in Brooklyn the last weekend of July will be on Disney XD or ESPN channels, according to the programming schedule.”The Overwatch League Grand Finals is by far our most comprehensive television distribution for an eSports event over a single weekend,” Disney and ESPN media networks executive vice president Justin Connolly said in a release.A recap of the championship will be broadcast on Disney-owned ABC on July 29.Coverage will include Disney airing matches during “prime time” television viewing for the first time, according to Vlastelica.”It is a chance to increase the reach of our league content,” Vlastelica said.In a relatively short space of time, the Overwatch League has developed its own stars and legions of fans who follow the tournament either virtually or in person at live events.Launched in January, the 12-team competition comprises franchises representing cities on three continents, with nine teams from the United States and one each from Britain, China and South Korea. The league’s models are the major US professional sports leagues such as the National Football League or the National Basketball Association, with a postseason culminating in a July 26-28 grand final where a $1 million prize will be up for grabs.Overwatch itself is a first-person shooter video game which sees teams of six players battle rival teams in a fast-paced, futuristic setting.
