FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s Thomas Rodrigues is the Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Rodrigues began the week with a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 10-9 victory over Prairie View A&M’s Xavier Lawrence at the top slot in singles play. After the Islanders dropped the doubles point against UTRGV on Friday, Rodrigues provided a crucial point in singles, defeating Elliot Johnstone at the No. 4 flight (6-0, 6-2), to help propel Corpus Christi’s rally to win the dual match. The sophomore from Romorantin, France, also earned a 6-1 doubles victory with Kyohei Yamanka in the No. 3 doubles slot in the first match against the Panthers before moving to the No. 2 spot with William Mottet in the second match, winning 6-4. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
