first_imgTORONTO – The United States has arrested and charged the chief executive of cybersecurity firm Phantom Secure, alleging the Vancouver-area businessman has conspired to provide drug traffickers with modified BlackBerry smartphones to evade law enforcement.Vincent Ramos of Richmond, B.C., was arrested March 7 in Bellingham, Wash., near Seattle, and faces criminal charges filed with a U.S. district court in San Diego, Calif. Those records are sealed. The U.S. Justice Department announced the charges Thursday following a years-long undercover operation that included several American, Australian and Canadian agencies including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.Authorities continue to seek four other suspects from various countries. They allege that Phantom Secure, which bills itself as “the world’s most trusted communication service,” advertised its products as impervious to decryption and guaranteed that evidence on a device could be destroyed remotely if it was compromised. The Department of Justice said the case is the first time the U.S. government has targeted a company and its principals “for knowingly and intentionally conspiring with criminal organizations by providing them with the technological tools to evade law enforcement and obstruct justice while committing transnational drug trafficking.”The Canadian Press hasn’t been able to contact Ramos or his lawyer for comment. None of the charges against Ramos have yet been proven in court. However, the Phantom Secure website has a notice that says it’s a “law-abiding company” that was founded to provide businesses and people the opportunity to communicate in private in this modern technological age.Ramos faces charges of racketeering conspiracy, also known as RICO conspiracy, and conspiracy to aid the distribution of narcotics. Both carry a maximum penalty of life in prison.A partially blacked-out affidavit by an FBI special agent and attached to the warrant to arrest Ramos, alleges that Phantom Secure devices and services were “specifically designed to prevent law enforcement from intercepting and monitoring communication” and its corporate structure was set up to “obstruct, impede, and evade law enforcement.”It alleges the company’s marketing material promotes Phantom Secure’s technical team modifies BlackBerry handsets by removing the microphone, GPS navigation, camera, internet and messenger service and then installs encryption software on an email program routed to servers in countries such as Panama.“According to law enforcement sources in Australia, Canada and the United States, Phantom Secure devices are used by the upper echelon members of various transnational criminal organizations to communicate with their criminal compatriots and conduct the illegal activities of the organization,” the affidavit said. The affidavit also includes a transcript of an exchange between an undercover RCMP agent posing as a drug trafficker and an unidentified Phantom Secure employee who wiped supposedly incriminating data from a modified BlackBerry.last_img read more

first_imgDefense officials will start to form a task force to study the business case for consolidating the military’s three exchange services and the Defense Commissary Agency, after Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan this week approved a memo laying out the next steps for a possible merger of military resale activities. Shanahan said he agrees “a single consolidated organization offers the greatest potential to achieve the economies and efficiencies” that are necessary to ensure commissary and exchange benefits survive, according to the memo. The task force is scheduled to complete its analysis by Oct. 31, at which point it would begin planning for consolidation, reports Military Times. If the DOD chief management officer approves the business case, the team would complete integration planning by Jan. 31, 2019, and the consolidation would begin under existing authorities. Lawmakers would be afforded input into the decision, however, under an amendment to the House version of the fiscal 2019 defense authorization bill.Photo by Michelle Bir Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

first_img Volkswagen (VW) first sold a diesel vehicle in Britain equipped with software which rigged the result of emissions tests in 2008, UK managing director Paul Willis told the Commons Transport select committee on 12 October. It seems around 2008 from the information I have at the moment. I knew nothing about this subject until 19 September this year, when I first heard it on the news from the United States.During the hearing Willis answered questions from British lawmakers and vowed that Volkswagen would work to win back trust. He also said there were questions around the emissions testing process, and that the firm should discuss with British regulators the possibility of paying towards the re-testing of vehicles. Willis told Louise Ellman, the chair of the parliamentary committee, that the first recalls of the faulty models will take place in the first quarter of 2016.Were determined to get to the bottom of this, because we have to get to the bottom of this issue to regain the trust of our customers. We will call the cars back step by step and I intend in the United Kingdom to contact every single customer to try to call those cars back, said Willis. The Volkswagen managing director also defended allegations that it was a corporate decision to circumvent the emissions tests. I find it absolutely implausible that senior people of the company would have known of these issues with regard to the testing regime, he said. The biggest business crisis in VWs 78-year history has wiped about a third off its share price, forced out its long-time CEO, prompted investigations across the world and shaken both the car industry and German establishment. first_imgBy Sean Yoes, AFRO Baltimore EditorThere are thousands of people in Baltimore, many of them among the most disenfranchised communities of the city, who dread this week because they will have to bid farewell to Chief Melvin Russell, a man who embodied the term “public servant” as a member of the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), for 39 years.Russell, the former chief of the Community Collaboration Division and a deputy commissioner, will officially step down from his posts on April 24, the first day sweeping changes to the BPD are scheduled to begin; much of the restructuring is aimed at BPD command staff, which Russell was a part of.However, there is a massive celebration planned in honor of Russell that will take place in front of City Hall on the 25th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Allegedly, the send off for Russell is being spearheaded by new Police Commissioner Michael Harrison. Several members of the BPD command staff will also reportedly be in attendance to honor Russell and his work, which some argue has been transcendent in many communities.Several influential members of Baltimore’s clergy allegedly pushed hard to make sure Russell, an ordained minister and an elder at New Beginnings Ministries, under Pastor Terry Love, was feted properly and publicly.“The clergy of the city has been working with Chief Russell for many years, even before the Freddie Gray incident…we’ve worked with Russell for many, many years, building relationships between the community and the police department,” said Bishop Angel Nunez, senior pastor of the Bilingual Christian Church of Baltimore. Although Nunez will not reveal specifics of the confidential meeting between Baltimore clergy members and Commissioner Harrison (who is also an ordained minister), Nunez did suggest that Russell will continue to serve the city he loves.“In my mind I think there are other avenues we need to approach to make sure that there is not a loss,” Nunez said. “We are excited for what the future is to bring. I will not elaborate at this moment, but we are in expectation of a better police department … and our beloved chief will be involved one way or another.”last_img read more

first_img(PhysOrg.com) — An ancient form may be coming to the modern world. A new project, called the Lunar Cubit, features a set of nine black pyramid-shaped solar powered structured. The structures will power thousands of homes in the Abu Dhabi desert. Each of the pyramids would be able to provide power to about 250 desert homes. This instillation may not be powerful as a standard solar power farm, but it would be visually stunning. Egypt to open inner chambers of ‘bent’ pyramid The Lunar Cubit project was designed by Robert Flottemesch, Jen DeNike, Johanna Ballhaus, and Adrian P. De Luca. It is inspired by the ancient measurements that allowed for the original pyramids to be constructed, with the proposed measurements proportional to the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Giza. This design allows for the structures to also act as a lunar calender. The structures will use LED lights to illuminate in different combinations to indicate the waxing or waning of the moon. The project was first submitted as a proposal in the Land Art Generator Initiative. The contest asked designers to create a large-scale renewable energy project that would double as a work of art.The Lunar Cubit would feature frameless solar panels made of glass and amorphous silicon. The structures would be expected to pay back the cost of construction in about five years. All nine of the pyramids would constitute a 1.74 MW utility-scale power plant, with the central pyramid being responsible for converting the energy to AC electricity for home use.
