first_img About Howard Lake Howard Lake is a digital fundraising entrepreneur. Publisher of UK Fundraising, the world’s first web resource for professional fundraisers, since 1994. Trainer and consultant in digital fundraising. Founder of Fundraising Camp and co-founder of GoodJobs.org.uk. Researching massive growth in giving. UK leads Europe in philanthropy education – but it’s a small field Five barriers to philanthropy educationThe report listed five barriers to developing philanthropy education:University leaderships have not prioritised philanthropy research or education to date.Scholarship about philanthropy is not internally embedded or sufficiently valued in the academy. It lacks academic and financial incentives and disciplinary rooting and student demand is unproven.Philanthropists and foundations have traditionally shown a limited interest in supporting philanthropy research, which some perceive as navel‐gazing or potentially raising awkward questions.Philanthropic funders are showing a growing interest in philanthropy research reflecting greater professionalisation, introspection and scrutiny, but foundation funding in this area could create conflicts of interest.Philanthropy education presents multiple opportunities for universities both at the institutional level – in terms of building donor relationships, understanding donor motivations, and developing the skills of fundraisers – as well as at the scholarly level in terms of advancing academic knowledge. The report calls for a number of new measures to boost the provision of philanthropy education across universities. These include the creation of curricular guidelines for teaching philanthropy and the launch of a multi-disciplinary academic journal of philanthropy to galvanise scholars in the area. They also outline the need for research councils to increase their investments in deepening understanding of philanthropy. The report concludes:“This research suggests that considerable potential exists for the development of an inter-disciplinary field of philanthropy studies in Europe. The creation of new courses, chairs and centres on philanthropy, the increased involvement of philanthropy practitioners in academic settings and the interest of some foundations to create a ‘philanthropy learning infrastructure’ across Europe reflect this potential… All will be necessary if philanthropy education is to thrive and the much‐discussed but still mercurial phenomenon is to be better understood.”  247 total views,  1 views today Tagged with: Giving/Philanthropy Research / statistics Very few universities in Europe offer any kind of education about philanthropy, a new report published by the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy and Cass Business School has concluded. The study, Philanthropy education in the UK and continental Europe: Current provision, perceptions and opportunities – authored by Charles Keidan with Dr Tobias Jung and professor Cathy Pharaoh – set out to “illuminate” the scale and scope of philanthropy infrastructure in Europe and highlight the key issues affecting the future development of the field.According to the report, even though the UK has the “most extensive philanthropy education infrastructure in Europe”, just five out of the UK’s more than 160 higher education institutions offer dedicated philanthropy modules or courses at undergraduate or postgraduate level. These are: AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to EmailEmailShare to WhatsAppWhatsAppShare to MessengerMessengerShare to MoreAddThis22  248 total views,  2 views today AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to EmailEmailShare to WhatsAppWhatsAppShare to MessengerMessengerShare to MoreAddThis22 Howard Lake | 29 October 2014 | News The report does not list Imperial College London, which launched an MSc in Philanthropy this month, although it does acknowledge that the Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy at Plymouth University has a chair in ‘philanthropic psychology’ in professor Jen Shang (both were launched after the data-gathering phase of the research was completed).Neither does the report list UK Universities that offer education in fundraising, such as Chichester University, although courses that combine fundraising and philanthropy, such as Kent’s ‘Fundraising and Philanthropy’ MA, are included in the report. In fact, the report says that the “conflation of philanthropy and fundraising” represents a “danger” to the development of philanthropy education. It says this is reflected in the renaming of some university fundraising departments as philanthropy departments.“On one level, these linguistic choices simply reflect the inter‐relation and coalescence of fundraising and philanthropy, and the fact that philanthropic resources are the primary target of fundraisers,” the report says.“But on another level the conceptual slippage elides the differences between the two concepts. The focus on philanthropy as a source of funds, while understandable from a fundraising perspective, risks missing some of philanthropy’s most defining features, as the expression of private visions of the public good.”European philanthropy coursesThroughout the rest of Europe there are 19 institutions offering university-based philanthropy courses, with four each in Germany and France and three in the Netherlands. Nine of the 20 countries surveyed have no such courses at all. first_img to go further News PakistanAsia – Pacific Pakistani TV anchor censored after denouncing violence against journalists Follow the news on Pakistan News News Reporters Without Borders is concerned about Afghan journalist Sami Yousafzai and his driver. There has been no news of them since 21 April when security forces arrested them, together with US reporter Eliza Griswold, in the tribal areas. The organisation is particularly worried that the journalist and his driver are at risk of illtreatment in detention. Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières) has called on the Pakistani government to provide early information about Afghan journalist Sami Yousafzai, held secretly by Pakistani security forces since 21 April. He was arrested in the tribal areas where he was traveling with American reporter Eliza Griswold, who was later expelled from the country. Their driver, Mohamad Salim, was also reported missing. The international press freedom organisation called for their immediate release, if they were arrested simply for reporting in Pakistani tribal areas. It said illtreatment meted out by security forces to journalist Khawar Mehdi Rizvi during his recent detention in connection with similar reporting, made it fear the worst for Yousafzai and his driver. On 21 April, Griswold, a freelance US reporter, Yousafzai, stringer for the US magazine Newsweek, and their driver were arrested at a checkpoint in Bakhakhel near Bannu as they tried to enter North Waziristan. The American journalist was wearing a burka to avoid being identified. Griswold was expelled to the United States within a few days but Yousafzai and his driver are still being secretly held.Yousafzai’s family, who live in Peshawar, alerted Newsweek, to which he contributes regularly on Afghanistan. He lived in Peshawar for many years before returning to Kabul after the fall of the Taliban. His by-lined articles on Afghanistan have appeared in the magazine.Griswold did not have the special permission demanded by the Pakistani authorities since the start of the Pakistani military offensive against armed Taliban and al-Qaeda groups in the Wana area of South Waziristan. No foreign journalist has been able to travel with permission to the region. However dozens of journalists from the tribal areas and Pakistani reporters have been able to work there freely. first_imgIs working in the City a smart HR move?On 26 Jun 2001 in Personnel Today “P” writes: I hear lotsof stories about HR professionals who move into roles in investment banking onvery large packages, yet many claim that the HR they practice is not verysophisticated. Is this true and should I consider a move into this area?Margaret Malpas, joint managingdirector of Malpas Flexible Learning writes: Ithink it is unwise to stereotype any employer.  Someemployers deliberately choose to apply best practices in HR whilst othersmay take a more pragmatic view.  It’s worth asking around aboutreputations in this area and looking at the websites of those youare thinking of applying to as these can provide a mine ofinformation.  You can often tell what the Company’s approach is from itsrecruitment page.Salariesin the City are generally significantly larger than in the provinces, forexample. But bear in mind that organisations are not generally altruistic, and they expect to get what they pay for! The pace of life andexpectations of employees may be very high and you would need to commute whichcould easily add a lot of time to your working day.  Vic Daniels, directorat Carr Lyons writes: While it is true that, generallyspeaking, investment banks don’t always adopt a policy of best practice HR, itvery much depends on the investment bank itself. Many of these types oforganisation have come a very long way in HR terms during the course of thelast five years and have attempted to move away from administration towardsproviding a more business-focused value-added HR service. Having said this, many still have a long way to go. Moving into HR in investment banking isdifferent and is not for everyone. You have to have the credibility to stand upto often high revenue earners, will need to be prepared to make quick decisionsand justify them and work longer hours. The rewards are there financially, butthe job can often be stressful and you may find that you are being paid more tooften deal with what on the surface seem to be fairly mundane tasks. My adviceis that you should meet with as many investment banks as you can and see asmany people in those organisations as possible, both in HR and line managers. You will then hopefully be able to get a better feel as to where eachorganisation sees itself in HR terms and whether a move into it will provideyou with all you need from your next career move. first_imgJanelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer is due out later this month on April 27th, marking her first album in five years. In addition to Grimes (who does not appear in the official music video for “PYNK”), the album also features contributions from the Purple One himself, the late and great Prince. Like the other two singles off the album and this newest release, Dirty Computer sees Janelle Monáe solidifying herself as a feminist icon and outspoken civil rights activist. Last month, Monáe made waves with her impassioned speech at the Grammys, which rallied to fight against sexual harassment and abuse in the industry. On April 27th, alternative-R&B starlet Janelle Monáe will release her long-awaited third studio album, Dirty Computer. Today, Monáe has released a brand-new single titled “PYNK”, which also features Monáe’s past collaborator, Canadian indie songstress Grimes. Marking the third single off the upcoming Diry Computer following previous singles “Make Me Feel” and “Django Jane”, the release of “PYNK” was paired with a triumphant music video directed by Emma Westenberg and starring actress Tessa Thompson.A description of the new song reads, “PYNK is a brash celebration of creation. self love. sexuality. and pussy power! PYNK is the color that unites us all, for pink is the color found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere… PYNK is where the future is born….” Unsurprisingly, the video, which is described as an “EMOTION PICTURE (definition): a narrative film and accompanying musical album,” focuses on celebrating the power of the pussy. Set in the desert, the poppy, anthemic tune is accompanied by a celebratory and whimsical music video, which you can watch below.Janelle Monáe & Grimes – “PYNK”last_img read more
