first_img Euro 2016 WILL remain in France, UEFA announce 1 Euro 2016 will remain in France, UEFA has announced. The country’s hosting of the tournament has come under scrutiny since Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris, which killed 129 people with many more seriously injured.France’s 1958 World Cup star Just Fontaine was one prominent figure to call on the country to give up hosting rights, claiming: “It is simply too dangerous”.But a statement from UEFA on Monday read: “For over three years now, (tournament organising committee) Euro 2016 SAS has been working closely with the relevant authorities to develop the most appropriate mechanisms in order to guarantee there is a safe and secure tournament and we are confident that the necessary measures will be taken to ensure that is the case for all involved.“The Euro final draw will go ahead as scheduled on 12 December at the Palais des Congres in Paris and the final tournament will be played in France from 10 June to 10 July 2016.”Fontaine, 82, was present at the Stade de France on Friday night when the stadium was one of the venues targeted in what appeared to be co-ordinated attacks across the French capital.Explosions could be heard inside the stadium as three suicide bombers detonated vests outside the ground while the friendly between France and Germany continued.Fontaine, who holds the record for the most goals scored at a single World Cup finals after hitting 13 at the 1958 tournament in Sweden, said in quotes reported by German newspaper Die Welt: “Any other country could stage (Euro 2016), but we cannot.“I think France should forego the tournament.“I am very afraid that this black Friday could be repeated. I think we cannot guarantee the safety that is required to host such a big event.“It is simply too dangerous. Do you really think that people are going to go to the Stade de France in future?”UEFA’s statement, though, read: “Following the dramatic events that occurred last Friday in Paris, UEFA and Euro 2016 SAS wish to reaffirm their commitment in placing safety and security at the centre of their organisational plans.“While there is no reason to believe that the Euro might become the target of any attack, the potential terrorist threat has always been taken into account since the beginning of the project. Euro 2016 SAS and all stakeholders involved in the organisation of the tournament will continue their joint work and will regularly monitor the level of risk for the tournament and their respective organisational plans.”last_img read more

first_img Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart 1 Manchester City were left to count the cost after goalkeeper Joe Hart limped off in a doubly damaging Champions League defeat at Juventus.City were beaten 1-0 in Turin to lose control of Group D, slipping to second behind the Italians and facing the prospect of yet another tough draw in the last 16.But even more worrying was an injury to England glovesman Hart, who limped off with a hamstring problem after 81 minutes.Hart later described the injury as “nothing – a little bit tight” but City are going to have to wait until they return home to learn the full extent of the issue. If the 28-year-old misses the weekend clash with Southampton, he would join an injury list that currently includes Vincent Kompany, David Silva, Pablo Zabaleta, Wilfried Bony, Samir Nasri and Eliaquim Mangala.Pellegrini said: “In this moment, it is impossible to know. He has a problem in his hamstring.“He has been carrying some problem in his back the last week, so tomorrow we will see with the doctor which is the problem with Joe.”Pellegrini also expects Kompany to be out for at least a fortnight with his calf problem while there is still no definitive news on Silva’s ankle injury. The Blues boss said: “Vincent doesn’t have any chance to play this week because he’s not started running already, so he has two weeks more.“David improved a little bit more the last two days. He’s working with the physio in Manchester.“We will see. We don’t have many days until Saturday but when we arrive in Manchester we will have a look.”Pellegrini was upbeat about his team’s performance despite the result allowing Juve to take over at the top. Mario Mandzukic scored the only goal but both sides spurned a host of other chances. Raheem Sterling, Yaya Toure and Fernandinho all missed good opportunities for City while Fernando had a header touched onto the post. The Chilean said: “It’s a difficult moment for the team. That’s why in this moment I am not so unhappy in the way we played because we didn’t have many chances to make substitutions.“I think we were very unlucky to lose this game – I think the minimum we deserved was a draw.“It’s not an easy stadium, it’s not an easy team, but we couldn’t get the result we wanted.”Pellegrini has not given up hope of reclaiming top spot, but his side must beat Borussia Monchengladbach and Juventus will need to lose at Sevilla.last_img read more

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREStriving toward a more perfect me: Doug McIntyre SANTA CLARITA – More than 1,000 people got flu shots on the go Friday at a drive-through clinic held at two College of the Canyons parking lots. “I think this is the most fabulous setup I have ever seen,” said makeup artist Doris Milek as she waited her turn sitting in a pickup truck. Drivers entered one parking lot and received flu-shot information and a registration form, on which they listed personal information and any allergies. Then they made their way to a second parking lot with six stations distributing free injections. Milek, 63, of Valencia estimated that it took her five minutes to get to the front of the line. “This is so cool,” she said as she got her shot. The clinic, a joint effort of the College of the Canyons, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the city of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s and Fire departments, is used as a mass immunization drill. “This event proves we need to partner with cities to carry out public health mass vaccinations or, in the event of an anthrax attack, to pass out medication to people,” said Deborah Davenport, director of community health services for the county Department of Public Health. Friday’s final tally: 731 vehicles, including three motorcycles, and 1,073 shots – 900 adults and 173 children. A similar clinic at Moorpark College on Friday served hundreds of people. center_img Last year’s Santa Clarita clinic gave out 839 shots, said John McElwain, a College of the Canyons spokesman. At Station No. 2, nursing students Julie Deruso and Carolyn Churchfield gave out shots supervised by College of the Canyons nursing instructor Sylvia Duncan and a registered nurse from the county. “We get to see people from the community we know. My mom and dad came by earlier,” Churchfield, 22, of Castaic said, noting she got to give her father a shot. Sue Skorniakoff and her 19-year-old daughter, Amanda, got their vaccine without getting out of their Mercedes-Benz. “We thought we would give it a shot,” the Valencia homemaker said.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. first_imgSouthland fire officials will be on high alert through the Thanksgiving holiday, in part because of dry, gusty Santa Ana winds expected to begin blowing through the area starting later today. The National Weather Service forecast heavy winds from late today through Saturday, with some gusts reaching up to 55 mph in canyons, passes and other wind-prone areas. Relative humidities are expected to fall into the single digits tomorrow and remain low through Saturday, meaning “significantly heightened fire danger,” according to the weather service. The return of the Santa Ana winds has local fire agencies bracing for possible wildfires — with conditions expected to rival those that led to a series of fire storms across the region last month. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREStriving toward a more perfect me: Doug McIntyre The Los Angeles County Fire Department has placed every off-duty firefighter on standby status over the Thanksgiving holiday and has strike teams in place. Orange County fire officials are also on high alert, while Riverside County crews are getting tanker planes ready. “Except for expected slightly cooler temperatures, we can have conditions similar to what we had during the Santiago Fire,” Orange County Fire Authority Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion said earlier this week. “This is a recipe for extreme fire behavior.” Los Angeles County fire Inspector Jason Hurd said everyone with the department will be on standby, and about 85 additional people will be on duty each day. A five-engine strike team will be posted in Calabasas, in addition to Cal Fire strike teams that will be based in Santa Clarita and La Ca ada Flintridge. Hurd said 32 hand crews, nine water tenders and six helicopters will also be on standby. In Orange County, precautionary measures will include staffing for 10 additional fire engines, two helicopters, two hand crews and two bulldozers. Concepcion said Cal Fire is assisting the Orange County Fire Authority with five additional engines. Cal Fire is also staging 100 fire engines and 10 water tenders in Riverside County. The state will mobilize more than 400 engine companies to assist Southland counties and will have available 28 fixed-wing aircraft — 13 more aircraft than normal for this time of year. The U.S. Forest Service will have 14 heli-tankers available for the Southern California region. Hurd said residents should be prepared in the case of an emergency evacuation by having important items handy, parking their cars facing the street and having at least two escape routes out of the neighborhood.
